50% Opacity + 50% Opacity = ?

Postby computerartclub » Mon Jan 23, 2017 2:58 pm

I'm trying to create a tartan pattern in Inkscape 0.92 and I have a few questions.

I am using the default template right now as I had some issues with the pattern template (will post later)

I had each band set at 50% opacity. I would have expected that the bands would be 100% opacity where they overlap (e.g. 50% black over 50% black should be 100% black). This is not the case.
Can anyone enlighten me on how opacity works?

It doesn't work like that. Think of it as letting 50% of the background intensity show through. If you add another object on top that, also with 50% opacity, it will allow 50% of your previous 50% through - in other words 25% of the background intensity will show through.
