Ways / plugin to visualize .SVG thumbnails in Win Explorer

Postby cadu » Thu Mar 22, 2012 4:28 am

Hi,

It seems the "Renesis Player" which made available thumbnails from SVG in windows explorer isn't more available (viewtopic.php?f=22&t=973&p=26323&hilit=thumbnail#p26323).

Does anyone know other way to visualize .SVG "Thumbnails" through Windows Explorer?

Thanks in advance,
Cadu

I actually went to quite a lot of trouble to locate the creator of the Renesis software (after the website was taken down) since it was copyrighted. But I could not find anyone who cares. I do have the last and most current version, and would be glad to send you a copy. However of course, it's not being actively developed or supported, and it only displays about half of all my SVGs, at best. Honestly I usually use the Inkscape Open dialog to look at SVG thumbnails.

I don't know of any other comparable software. I wish someone would pick up the project, but it does not appear that anyone is interested. I think Windows users' best hope is that MS might actually make SVGs viewable in WinExplorer, hopefully in the next major OS. But I really have no idea if that is being worked on.

Hi,

I will try to deal Inkscape Open dialog!

About Renesis I just have found this link:
http://www.localinformationsystems.co.uk/Downloads.aspx

Also I found this another that provides thumbnails to many many formats (it seems not be able to load SVG although, but deal with XCF - GIMP):
http://code.google.com/p/sagethumbs/

And this other I just have try the trial version. The former is for free and this costs U$ 25. It deals with a plenty of formats including SVG. But it isn't able to thumbnail XCF:

Any news about this subject, please tell me!

Best,
Cadu

Yes, that file at localinformationsystems is one of the files. The Renesis Player in total consisted of 3 files -- that one which displays some SVGs in IE, the one you're looking for that displays some SVG thumbs in WinExplorer, and the 3rd I don't remember at the moment. Wherever that website found that one Renesis file, I doubt they have permission from the author. But at this point, I consider him to have abandoned his software, and that copyright no longer applies. Still, out of respect for copyrights in general, I personally will only share my files privately. I have known that others have uploaded the files, here and there, and if you've read the other forum topics about this, you may have found some.

While I have not searched specifically for something like Renesis, I have searched for any kind of image viewer that will display SVGs. I was not successful in finding a free one (for Windows). I found a few that claimed to display any kind of image files, but they did not display SVGs.

Thanks Cadu. After 6 years of searching for an answer, Mysticthumbs is showing my .svg thumbs from Inkscape. I just started it. I had to increase the size of the view in windows for one folder and use the mystic thumbs control panel and select enable small icons to be viewed in order for me to see them. This will save hours and hours of hunting to find the right files. Definitely worth $25. I was put off by the program downloading another called ghostscript. AVG virus check said it was ok.
