Transparent background
Is there a way to get inkscape to display a checkerboard pattern when the document background is transparent? I am trying to create a white icon on a transparent background and without this feature its quite difficult!

Just change the document background color to a different non-transparent color till you've finished your work. Or place an solid rectangle on a background layer.
