How to Make Realistic Objects on Inkscape?

Postby emark.mark20 » Thu Feb 21, 2013 7:10 am

Hello All, I am very fascinated with the quality of the pictures on this link about the Gaussian blur effects. I know how to use the Gaussian blur slider but I am not sure how to achieve the realistic effects in the pictures of cars in this link:
http://inkscape.org/screenshots/index.p ... rsion=0.45

I have created an arm pad which is cartoon y right now. The file is attached here. I would like to make it more realistic as those cars shown in the link.

Does anyone have instructions how to do this? Thanks.

In addition, I am unsure of how to upload svg files so my apologies if you cant access it. Would like some instructions how to do this.

Hi there,
you can attach svg with the upload attachment button under the reply panel.
Another way is to upload somewhere, like dropbox.com or openclipart.org,
then paste the svg's url between the svg tags.

Talking of this image:
Image
Most commonly blur filter is used to add drop shadow to the drawing. Here it is used in the highights as well.
It is used above the front wheel, on the bonnet's right end with masking, and on the back and side of the car without any masking -resulting in some defocus-like effect.
Some other blurring is involved on the tires and on other little parts too.
With my experience I can say that blurring is best to be used as less as possible. It can dramatically slow down the rendering of your drawing, and
there can be problems with it both when exporting to png or saving to pdf.
Even that image uses gradients where ever it can instead of blurring.
I would suggest to try to draw something realistic with only gradients.
Then add some drop shadows.
And, if you tried all the possibilities with those, consider using blurred objects with masking.

Some of those are very complex images, which require advanced Inkscape skills. One of them is about a feature that's still under development (gradient meshes). At least one of them is actually a tutorial, and if you follow it, you can learn that skill.

I can't see your image. Something went wrong when you inserted it.

Lazur URH, I'm not sure about suggesting OCL as a simple image host. I understand it to be more of a gallery. Unless the end product is something like a tutorial, I wouldn't upload unfinished images there. (Unless I misunderstand OCL) Dropbox is an option. The only true image host besides Dropbox (which if I understand correctly, is cloud-based, so not necessarily a true internet host) which accepts SVG is http://imgh.us. Or of course upload here via attachment.

If you're a beginner with Inkscape, and unless you're some kind of savant, the kind of image which Lazur URH shows, would take....idk, at least 6 months of intense study of Inkscape, to acquire the needed skills. And that's not to mention artistic skills, which Inkscape tutorials can't necessarily teach. And then, even an expert Inkscape artist would need at least a week to make that drawing...unless they have a couple 3 free 8 hours days....imo.

Not a simple image host, as the new work uploaded there turns automatically to public domain. For drafts it might not be a good idea to use for, or material to have some copyrights, but technically it can be an option to be used. They state:
"...Note that files may be deleted form the Open Clipart Library for a number of reasons, most being Trademark or licence issues, or non-clipart files or images using the site as an image hosting service (ie all files submitted without following the guidelines). All of these will be removed...." in their FAQ.
BUT there is a feature of deleting the uploaded svg by the user, so after the uploaded svg finishes its task you can kindly remove from their site.
If the work is good enough for being an open clipart, then its not even necessary to do.

With that image I would say it doesn't take more time to draw all the necessary things than 5-8 hours the most.
See the wheels: the good colouring hides the fact that the geometry is off. I think that who drew this, did not put 3 days work into it. If he did it could be WAY better.

I tried that and pasted the whole url between the svgs that appeared. It did not work as you can see in the initial post.

There is the url of the file on your local disc between those tags. You should upload it somewhere online or move from working on pc to a server machine.
THEN use the url that our computers can load. We cannot access files on your local disk.
