Gimp 3.0 interface concept

Postby Unborned » Fri Apr 17, 2009 10:30 pm

I have definitely too much free time...

I'm working on interface mock-up of Gimp 3.0. It's in very early stage right now. Of course I used Inkscape to made it. :)
Maybe I will try to post it on GIMP UI brainstorm.

Full version 1280x800 (non-resized) can be found here: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/484857/temp/ ... mockup.png

Here's a small screen-shot:

I haven't made any decent icons yet. I probably will use Tango set anyway.

Any thoughts? ;)

yeah, i'd use gimp a lot more if it had a clean interface like that. all the little free floating dialogue and tool boxes are confusing to me. this looks great.

Agreed. Very clean interface. Although hardcore GIMP users might hate it for looking like Photoshop :) Sometimes I wonder if GIMP is different for the sake of being different.

I agree too!

Based on a few discussions I've seen, the GIMP is the way it is, because it's easier for development (all the litte dialog boxes). And in those discussions, the hard core GIMP users.....well, I'll be surprised if it ever takes on a one-window type appearance. But I certainly would welcome it myself ;)

Personnaly, I hate GIMP 2 interface.

Your GUI looks like Photoshop so I like this, but I think that GIMP's developers don't want to copy Adobe.

this design is great. Some Say it looks like photoshop. But usability is the first thing. Gimp is not a photoshop clone. We are not Copying Adobe. We Improving GIMP. 8-)

As a GIMP and Inkscape user I would like to see all the most used commands always on screen.
Like in Inkscape I might go from View > Display Mode > Normal - to View > Display Mode > Outline a zillion times - is there a toggle button for that?

Some of us remember the keyboard short cuts better than others...
Plus seeing the MOST USED stuff makes learning easy.

In GIMP, think about the commands that you use, doing virtually anything. For me that might be zooming in and out, for example - these hot commands are nice to be one click or slider operations that are IN YOUR FACE easy to find.

Toggling the GIMP interface to all act like one window or many so called "boxes" is a must.
Being able to custom place ones "most used buttons" in the MENU BAR helps on real estate but is rarely allowed.

All in all, very nice use so far of the screen real estate on your GUI design.
If that is a zoom slider - yes I like it!
The overall look is very nice!
...And nice job in Inkscape! :)

I like the tabbed images also.

Thanks!
I knew that from looking at the menus. But I do not have a keypad on my keyboard so I was hoping there was a button to toggle normal and outline view.

This layout looks great!

On a side note: i do hope gimp developers can make gimp skinnable. Then we can have a full community of skinners and able to change the theme everynow and then so it doesn't look boring.

Notebook?

You should hav a "fn" key or something to get an embedded numpad. For example, on my notebook I can go ctrl-fn-i (as fn-i is the 5 from the embedded keypad).

There is also keybindings.rc that might be useful to change the key. I beleive the action is ViewModeToggle

There are some nice concepts in there but generally I think it's generally too much of a deviation fromt he current plans for the gui.

I appreciate that these designs were drawn up before the designs for the single-window gui was announced, but there is already now a single-window development version of gimp available, which has a tabbed interface and floating windows (though they're not constrained to the dimensions of the main window).

It's getting closer to resembling the Inkscape interface, which is the one that I like most

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad travel keyboard with a built in touchpad and pointing stick that is super small. Very nice keyboard if you need both small and a touch pad. No number pad is wha make it smaller than a full size keyboard, It is about the size of a small Thinkpad notebook keyboard and laid out the same way. Still seems like there would be an on screen button in Inkscape for that command. I use that command a lot.

Fn seems to work for the all the blue symbols on the keyboard but not the embedded number pad.
NumLk is written small above the ScrLk and I do not really know how to activate it.
The letter I is the same as 5 on the embedded number pad.

On my HP, I use [fn][numlk] to toggle the num-lock (I get a light and a message on the screen that num locks is on).
Once numlock is on, I can use [fn]i to type the number 5, and [ctrl][fn]i to toggle the mode in inkscape.

Without the numlock on it won't do anything.

Hmm, that does not work here. I can not get the NumLk to light up.
Fn, Shift both do not help turn that on.

For me changing to single window photoshop style interface would be a big loss, the ability to organize the dialog boxes the way I like and to manage my screen real estate by myself is a huge advantage. Of course it means the main edit window should not be fullscreen which is something we are not used to, because of the mainstream single window applications.

The only welcome addition would be a tabbed main edit window to better handle several pictures at once, on the other hand sometimes you need to see 2 pictures side by side.

Regarding commands accessibility, I believe gimp is really meant to be used with keyboard shortcuts. The basic concept to have all commands accessed from the right click menu is just amazing, but I agree that most used commands should be easier to access in this menu (which would be a different subset of commands for each user of course...).

Luckily GIMP 2.7/2.8 has tabs and an option to choose between single or multiple window mode and there's still lots of options to rearrange tabs/docks to how you want them. Check out the screenshot or better still compile/install the beta yourself and give it a try!

Additionally, might be a good idea to keep up with this blog to see the latest on UI development.
