Help w/ Bezier

Postby DrT » Sun Nov 25, 2018 7:59 am

Hi!

I am a newbie! I am using Inkscape 0.92.3 running on Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit, w/ Service Pack 1.

To create a straight line, I select the Bezier Tool, left-click, release mouth, drag, ..., left-click again, and hit enter. And, it works!

But, sometimes, when I hit enter, a copy of the Inskscape window appears:

What happened?

Thank you!

Pwaaahh??

You mean it appears on the canvas? Like an imported raster image?

How long does it stay there? Is it selectable? Try selecting it, and check the status bar to find out what kind of object it is.

I can't tell because the image is so small. Can you identify what is on the canvas, in the Inkscape window? Is it always the same thing? Is it something different every time? Is it the same thing that you're drawing?

Would you please make a screenshot of your Pen/Bezier tool control bar? I've tried to reproduce, so far without success. But I have no idea what options you might be using. So it's not really a good test.

Dear Brynn,

Thank you for your reply.

To answer your questions:

(1) Yes, it appears on the canvas next to the object. Both are outside the document.
(2) It stays there, it can be selected, and delete it.
(3) The Bezier Tool Controls show that the First Control (Create path) is selected and that the Shape is set to From clipboard.
(4) On the canvas, there is the object drawn, the image, and the document. In the post, I show the object and the image. The image is a copy of the entire screen.

Does it have to do with Shape set to From clipboard?

That would be curious. I cannot say anything about this bug, except for 'it shouldn't be like this, and it doesn't happen for me on Linux' - but I can give you a workaround, at least: Right-click to finish the current path.

Do you have any special kind of clipboard manager software installed? Or some cool, non-stock screenshot tool?

Dear Moini,

No, I don't have any clipboard manager.

Does it have to do with Shape set to From clipboard?

That wouldn't be a bad guess. But I really have no idea.

Do you have a screenshot of the Inkscape window on the clipboard?

If you switch the Shape dropdown from "From clipboard" to "None", does the problem still happen?

If you put something else on the clipboard, does that get pasted?

Whoa!! I've reproduced it..... I think.

1 - Using the Windows accessory, called Snipping tool, I dragged around the entire Inkscape window, then Edit menu > Copy
2 - In Inkscape, in Regular Bezier mode (also happens in Straight Line mode, didn't test other modes), with From Clipboard in the Shape dropdown menu
3 - Draw a random path, and instead of double-clicking to end the path, click once, then press Enter key
4 - The entire Inkscape window which was copied, is pasted onto the canvas

The difference is that what I got was the full size window. And DrT's screenshot shows it quite small. But maybe he or she had a small version of it on his or her clipboard? Hopefully attached is a screenshot of my result.

You can't actually see the path, because the pasted image of the whole window is covering it up. But you can see the bounding box.

I guess Inkscape can't use an image on the clipboard as pattern along path, so it just pastes the image??

But it has to be a bug, right?

Reproduced by selecting "From Clipboard" in the shape control. Had a screengrab (via PrtScr key) on the clipboard.

Suggest keeping shape set to none, as stated above.
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

OMG, with these concrete steps to reproduce, it happens for me, too. Also happens in master.
This has even been reported:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1763359

I'll bump the report there.
