Hi, I'm fairly new to Inkscape and the forum so please forgive me if i come across as a computer illiterate buffoon, but I like to believe i'm really not that bad.
i am trying to create a logo for my new business and am struggling with the effect I am after, I'm almost there (i think) but its not quite what I'm after yet
[img] [/img]
what I am trying to achieve, is to have the white area inside the "inside" part, to be transparent, but have a sharp edge on the inside with the blur fading out from that.
I hope i have managed to describe my problem adequately and hope you can help
thanks in advance

Re: Help with a logo effect
Welcome aboard!
You can achieve that either with nasking or clipping.
http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Clip.html
If you want to preserve the text as a text, then the masking is the only way.
However fonts can produce troubles, if you want to edit that image later on with another computer not having the right font installed.
So I would suggest to convert those objects to paths (Ctrl+Shift+C).
With masking, you would need a mask object that has the transparent parts filled with black, the others white,
while the clip object would be good if the transparent part was a hole inside a bigger path.
For the masking, it would be enough to group (Ctrl+G) the text with a black fill with a white rectangle below (End).
For the clipping, the rectangle would need to be combined with the text, and probably the path's direction changed.
Hope it was clear.
Good luck!

Hello.
I also think you coul use a clip path. I Think it must be composed of two paths one inside the other (like in the O or Q, etc), dependig of each letter.

Re: Help with a logo effect
I'll bet you could do it using inset and outset paths. Then give the inner paths less blur, and increasing as you go out. It will be a lot of trial and error though.
I think clipping would not give a progressive blur effect. It would just be a static blur that's cut off sharply -- much like what you already have there. But masking holds some possibility, for sure.

Re: Help with a logo effect
Example wih the blurred objects being preserved as texts, with some outlines given:

Note that this one is not rendered right through the browsers, and has some rendering issues in the current stabile version of inkscape too.
The top row is masked, the bottom is clipped.
Same image reproduced but this time with paths only:

Another solution would be to use a similar object with black and white shades, and use it as a masking object over a green one.
Here is an example for that.
The first row has a text used, the other paths:

Based on pdf structure, I would say that clipping is the more preferred of them.

Re: Help with a logo effect
Thank you all for you help.
Lazur URH you have achieved the effect that I'm after in the examples above with the paths, but i have been trying all day to recreate it but i cant. I try to use the clip but it only seams to keep the masked area, is there a way to invert selection or am i doing it totally wrong?
I'm sorry if this is basic stuff, but i am not that familiar with inkscape.
Thank you for your help

Re: Help with a logo effect
Maybe the explanation could have been clearer.
So once you made the text with green, convert it to path (Ctrl+C), ungroup characters (Ctrl+Shift+G), then combine them together (Ctrl+K).
Then, duplicate it (Ctrl+D), add green outlines and blurring as much as you like, then move that object to the bottom (End).
After that, draw a rectangle that covers the area. Preferably use the align and distribute tool to center align it with the path below.
Move it to the bottom, and reverse it's direction- or mirror it once.
Then add the top path to the selection, and combine it with the rectangle (Ctrl+K). Move it to the top (Home).
At this stage you should have a blurred path below, and a path with a right hole above it.
Select both objects, and set clipping.

Re: Help with a logo effect
Thank you again for your help Lazur URH, I was hoping to be writing this saying that I've done it and it looks brill, but unfortunately the computer literate buffoon is starting to show.
I am following your instructions but i get to the part where i have drawn a rectangle over the area, and you advise me to reverse it's direction- or mirror it once, but at this part my lack of inkscape knowledge shows as i have looked everywhere for something to do this, i have tried the flip tool, the invert selection and lots of others, but when it comes to combining the second (un-blurred text) to the rectangle it goes completely white leaving me with a white page.
i am so sorry for being so difficult.
thank you

Re: Help with a logo effect
Hmm I missed to write convert the rectangle to path before combining -and reversing.
The rectangle and the text just need to follow a different direction once they are both a path.
http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=16954#p62686
But even if all combined together and shows only white, you can select the 4 nodes with the node editor tool that were originally the rectangle's corners, and reverse those segments. It should work that way too.
