Stroking with dots

Postby ahoge » Tue Mar 23, 2010 2:44 am

Hello, I'm very new to inkscape and wanted to ask, is it possible to stroke an object with dots.
There's 'Dashes' drop down under stoke style, but if I choose dots and increase the width, the dots start looking more like rounded rectangles or sausages :)

Thanks in advance,
Alex

Do you mean you want them with sharp edges?

Just select the miter cap to be Butt cap (also in Fill and Stroke dialogue under Stroke style).
just hand over the chocolate and nobody gets hurt

Welcome to the forums!

Yeah, I think that's how it's supposed to be. Actually they're dashes, but at 1 px width and 100% zoom do look like dots. It sounds like you want them to be circular? I'm thinking that you'll want to use Pattern Along Path, if you want a dotted line. You can find instructions at the link in my signature, or Help menu > Inkscape manual. Or using Markers might also work (just below the Dashes drowdown). I don't think there's a circle or dot marker, but you could make one and then do Object to marker.

[Edit] Sorry prkos, we posted simultaneously!

I think Brynn's Pattern along path suggestion is the way to go. You'll want to measure and get the size of the dot and spacing right so that you can use the "repeated" option. If you use "repeated, stretched" to cover up miscalculating the circles will become slightly ovoid.

You can also edit the stroke dasharray. See the last post in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2400&start=0

Set the first value to 0, and set rounded endcaps like this:

stroke-dasharray:0, 24

will give dots every 24 px where the size of the dot is the width of the line.
