Default text style

Postby ronburk » Sat Feb 11, 2017 12:41 am

I can't remember having such a problem in 0.91, so perhaps I managed to mess up my config.

I create some text and set its style the way I want it. Then I create a Bezier curve that has stroke and no fill. Then the next text I create has stroke and no fill. Double-clicking the text tool button and switching between "last used style" and "this tool's own style" seems to have no effect. Once I draw that curve, my text style is pretty much screwed. I've pretty much resorted to never creating new text, just copying old text and changing it because the default style is never right.

Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

Switching alone won't help, you need to select a style when you do 'this tool's own style'. See also http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL ... #id1153501 .

Quote (this is not only valid for the shape tools):

"Each of the shape tools can be given a fixed style by selecting the This tool's own style option under the tool's entry in the Inkscape Preferences dialog (File → icon Inkscape Preferences... (Shift+Ctrl+P)). Clicking on the Current style color swatches will open the correct section of the Inkscape Preferences dialog. Set the style by selecting an object with the desired style and click on the Take from selection button. The Box Tool style cannot be changed. (However the Box Tool with the Last used style option will remember its own style.) "

Thanks! Apparently I fumbled along for years without understanding that part of the documentation. Turns out that a global style (not what I grokked when I read "current style") is virtually never useful for my work, and I had convinced myself that Inkscape had the ability to remember the "last style" on a per-object-type basis, which I guess is false. My misconception only became massively irritating when I started mixing so much text in. Approximating the behavior I would prefer requires remembering to change the text tool default style every time I switch fonts, I suppose.

You can also do that via the text and font dialog (it has got a button 'Set as default' or similar) - that may be quicker.

Oh, that's a good idea. I had not found a good use for that dialog before. I can leave that up on another monitor or even assign a spare mouse key to pop it up. Thanks!

Switching alone won't help, you need to select a style when you do 'this tool's own style'.

I'm having an amazingly hard time following these simple instructions, apparently.

Set the style by selecting an object with the desired style and click on the Take from selection button.

I select text with no stroke and black fill (aka "normal" text). I double-click the text tool. It already has radio button "This tool's own style" selected. It shows black stroke and no fill (aka "outline" text). I click the "Take from selection" button. Absolutely nothing in the dialog changes, it still shows outline text settings. I go back and select the normal text again, nothing in the dialog changes, press the button again, nothing in the dialog changes. When I go ahead and create new text, sure enough, it is outline text. I cannot find any way to convince Inkscape to stop drawing outline text by default.

Finally, I think I had to create new text, manually change its style to "normal", go back into preferences, select "last used style", create new text, then go back to preferences and select "This tool's own style" and maybe another "Take from selection".

I can't see how the literal directions in the documentation produce the claimed results. And now any new text has the big interline gap instead of the 1.1 spacing I had tediously set it to with all the new text control buttons. Something seems wrong here.

Mmh. Can't confirm what you're experiencing here :-/ (Inkscape 0.92.1pre2)

Steps I take:
- open preferences by double-clicking on text tool icon
- See it's set to 'last used style', black outline, no fill (had to add this in a previous round)
- select object with black fill, no outline
- Click on 'Take from selection'
- See color being 'swapped', correctly.

The line-spacing will be easier to set (and keep) in 0.92.1, it will be released in a couple of days.

One thing to double-check, although I imagine you already have. Some fonts are made to only be outline fonts. So just to be sure the font you're using to test is not one of those outline type of fonts.

Otherwise, I wonder of ronburk has come across a new bug? What kind of system are you using Inkscape in?

I'm not having any problems with Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit, inkscape 0.92, 64-bit. I can successfully change the text style, no problems.
