Can you map a jpg photo to a 3d box?

Postby icecreamx » Fri Apr 20, 2012 2:28 pm

I'm trying to make a 3d looking stretched canvas art piece on a wall setting. Is there a way to import a jpg file and map it to a 3d box?

some thing like this: http://http://snappycanvas.com/

look at the examples there. I know you can map a design to each side of a 3d object in illustrator but I don't have it anymore and really like Inkscape!

Thanks in advance!

Not currently possible in Inkscape AFAIK, unless the resident filter effects experts have a suggestion, but super easy in the GIMP, an open source and free raster editor.

The GIMP has a really good manual which will explain step by step :D

You can use the tools and deform your selection. But if you use one of the unstable builds and deal with a few glitches here and there, you can have the 'map to' filter which allows this:

I used the same image on all sides, but you can have different images if you want. Check it out!

Wow, that's awesome!
So it won't be long before Inkscape can do this.
Is the filter available separately from a dev version? I know there are a bunch at OCL that you can download.

so sorry, Brynn, for being unclear! The unstable build is a GIMP version. (2.7 & 2.8). But you can do this quite easily in Inkscape using :tool_3dbox: and the perspective extension...

I tried using Perspective on an imported JPG, but no can do. Apparently it doesn't work on non-vector images -- only on paths or groups. Unless I missed something?

Quite right, I meant that you could replicate what I did, which was using the SVG Inkscape logo and mapping it to the sides of a box.
To use a jpg you would have to trace it first.
