Hardware requirements

Postby FSK » Fri May 07, 2010 4:46 pm

Hello dear Community,

i am using inkscape on my laptop since long time ago, its a p4 3gh, with a ati mobile radeon and a bit to little ram. I now want to by my a new (desktop) pc, and im wondering if it is necessary to buy an expensive graphics card.

Also, is it necessary when using scribus, gimp or blender? is it helpful when i want to use filters or rendering? Is it helpful when i maybe want to try making animations or movies?

thanks for your (competent) answers,
yours FSK

I'm not aware that Inkscape uses any hardware acceleration. If I'm not wrong about that, then your choice of video card will have no impact on how well Inkscape performs. I'm sure Blender would benefit from a more powerful video card, but again, I don't think Scribus or Gimp would.

Inkscape, Gimp, Sribus: Large amounts of ram, fast CPU; the graphics card doesn't matter as it all rendering is done in software.
Blender: Requires a graphics card with good OpenGL support, but things like rendering still depend mostly on ram and CPU.

See http://www.blender.org/features-gallery/requirements/ for the blender fokes take.
