Is there a way to restore the original aspect ratio of scaled text?
I've found an older posting https://www.ruby-forum.com/topic/107467 that describes editing the xml
which works great for single objects
writing a batch script to do this for many objects as suggested is a little beyond my abilities,

does anyone have any tips?

seems you know the answer yourself.
With the xml editor you can easily edit the transformation values of the objects.
To add another option you can write an extension.
It shouldn't be a problem to anyone familiar with python.
Sadly I can only write some inx files but couldn't make a working py yet.
