I'm trying to create text similar to what I have below. I've figured out how to
put text on a path but this is slightly different as the top is flat while the bottom
bit is curved.
Any ideas? Great forum btw...

It will be possible with Live Path Effects in upcoming 0.46. Here is an example from Johan who is to blame 
for that feature:
