Bending a group of shapes

Postby kayamb » Wed Mar 11, 2009 7:51 am

Hi,

I've got a really simple drawing which is a group of shapes. It's available here: http://www.mediafire.com/?tonkzqdmwgt

I'm fairly new to Inkscape and I can't find how to achieve this: I'd like to bend this group of shapes, a bit like you would bend a sheet of paper. I need nothing too complicated, just something that would take a curved form, say, like a banana.
I tried the :tool_tweak: tool, but it sort of messes up the proportions within the group of shapes and it doesn't give me the level of flexibility I want.

Do you know how to achieve this?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Julien

You can use Pattern along path effect. In the development version there are live path effects that work on groups.

You can maybe get away with node sculpting - add more nodes to your paths using the Add nodes effect so you have a lot of nodes. Then using the Node tool select all the nodes in an object or a large area of nodes and hold Alt while dragging one of the selected nodes. Here is more info about node sculpting http://www.inkscape.org/screenshots/gal ... lpting.png

...or

Combine all shapes
Go to path effects
Add Bend Path
Edit on canvas
Break apart the object
Change colors of your objects or perform boolean opts to remove shapes to revert to original.

Thank you all for your advice. I'm afraid I haven't quite achieved what I want yet. I'm new to vector drawing and it's also hard for me to explain what I'm after.

In fact, I found an image which is pretty close to it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/insideout/westmidl ... el_322.jpg

I've got a basic straight shape to represents the reel, but I can't find a way to distort it and roll it around naturally. The tricky thing is that the reel contains sub-shapes and I cannot bend it without messing up those internal shapes.

I hope that description is a little more precise. Any advice would be really welcome.

Thanks a lot! ;)

I guess I can't give you a better advise right now because I think you are much better than I am. I am still learning. I wish someone could advise you on that.

Great job by the way.
