hello, I've been finding that i'm working with a few white fill objects where a boarder is not really convenient. Problem is, it's next to impossible to pick them out from the white background.
is it possible to set the background to a different colour? preferably a light grey?

Yes, any color!
Document Properties > Page tab > General > Background. Don't forget about the Alpha value, if applicable
