possibly a display issue?

Postby brynn » Sat Nov 05, 2011 12:29 pm

Hi Friends,
I'm having a problem with some text/paths that I'm working on (yes a little late for Halloween, but there's always next year, lol) that I think might be a display issue. I'll put a PNG below so you can see what I see, in case you can't reproduce the problem. And there's also the SVG attached, in case you need that.

The text comes from Windows, not anything that I downloaded. You can see the steps I've done with it, and the problem only seems to happen on the 2nd "L". As soon as I combine the paths, the orange stroke disappears. The reason I think it might be a display issue, is because when I zoom in and out, the "L" changes. At 100%, as in the screenshot, the fill shows but the stroke is missing. But when zooming, sometimes the stroke is showing but the fill is missing. Sometimes it has both fill and stroke, but only half of the L shows up (sometimes top half, sometimes left side). And at some zoom levels, it displays as expected. At one point in all my zooming, a tiny bit of the 1st L was missing, but I can't seem to make it happen again, to get a screenshot. For the most part, it's only happening to the 2nd L.

I would think it's just a bad font, except that when the problem shows up, it's not text, it's just simple paths. And there are no filters, blurs, or gradients, or anything that I know to cause display problems. I don't see anything wrong with the path that might make that letter behave differently. And apparently I could solve the problem for myself, by either not converting text to path, or just not combining the paths. So that's not a problem. But if there's a bug involved, I would want to be sure it's reported (I've searched Launchpad, but don't have great searching skills). And of course if it's anything on my side, I'd like to be able to fix it.

I do have 3 Inkscape docs open at the moment. I don't suppose that could have any effect?

This is Inkscape 0.48.1 on Windows 7, 64-bit. (No special screen, just a laptop LCD.)
Thanks for your help :D

It's one of the known issues with the old renderer in Inkscape (up to and including Inkscape 0.48.x), but no longer occurs with the new cairo-based renderer (for Inkscape 0.49).

This has been reported in many variations in the bug tracker already, and as mentioned above, it's fixed in the development builds.

Awesome ~suv!
Thanks for your help :D

I can't wait to see the new renderer in it's first stable release. I've heard/read so much about it by now.
