"Object to path" doesn't work

Postby berlinerzimt » Thu Mar 15, 2012 10:59 am

Hi,

I have just downloaded Inkscape and have discovered that "Object to path" doesn't work with word. I mean I would like to transform a Text into a path but that doesn't work. With a different object, i.e. ellipse it works fine. Do you know that problem. How can I solve that? Would be really great if you helped me fast.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

I haven't heard of any issues with this command. If you still can't get it to work, after several attempts, please either attach the SVG file to your next reply (use full editor, not quick reply, and look below Submit button for Upload attachment tab) or upload to a host of your choice and provide us the link. Then we can look at it and tell you what you're missing.

Unless you have a current development version of Inkscape? New issues are always possible there. But in general, most users should opt for the latest stable release, rather than developers' version.

If you do have a dev version, please let us know which one. And no matter which version, please provide the SVG file :D

Are you by chance following a tutorial from the web which gives instructions based on older Inkscape versions? Or could you give us some hints on what expectation "doesn't work" is based on?

Note I: Inkscape provides useful hints in the notification area of the status bar - on the object type of the current selected object, as well as e.g. for reasons why a command fails.

To figure out why you have problems which you had interpreted as failure, please try this: Select a text which had been converted to path and read the message in the status bar - it should tell something like this:
"Group of 4 objects in layer Layer 1. …"
Converting a text object to path creates a group - a container object which contains the paths for the individual letters. Read more about groups in the manual: Editing Basics » Groups.

Note II: The way text is converted to path had been changed in Inkscape 0.47 - older versions created a single complex path instead of a group containing multiple paths. Many tutorials out there on the web had originally been written for Inkscape 0.46 (or even older versions), and have instructions based on the old behavior.

To be able to follow such older tutorials "step by step", you can convert the group with the individual paths into a single (possible huge) path like this:
  1. ungroup it (menu 'Object > Ungroup', or 'Ctrl+U')
  2. keep the resulting selection and combine it (menu 'Path > Combine', or 'Ctrl+K')
After these two additional steps it should be possible to continue the tutorial (or whatever instructions you are following).

Demanding "fast" help (ASAP) in a user forum, from volunteers who spend their free time to help others as good as they can… doesn't really work. As far as I'm concerned, I tend to stay away from topics/demands for help which involve pressure to meet other people's deadlines.
