Working with a recent build (10922) I noticed this behavior and I wonder if someone with the same or close build can confirm it, so I know it's not a problem with my system.

Draw a rectangle.
Convert object to path.
Select all the nodes with .
In the control bar press the button that "Make[s] selected segments curves."
All the node handles appear.
Deselect completely, i.e. no nodes showing.
Select again and click on one or more nodes.
The node handles have disappeared!
(The same procedure in 48.1 at this point will show the node handles again. Yes! I know that these are production snapshots, etc., this is just curiosity, not complaint. )

Confirmed with r10922 on Mac OS X 10.5.8 and OS X 10.7.2

Based on tests with archived older builds, the change seems to have happened quite some time ago:

• r10019 behaves like the stable release 0.48.x
• r10031 no longer draws the extracted node handles of straight line segments

Possibly introduced with the 2geom update in r10025 (r10035 fixed one issue resulting from that update).
