Apologies if this seems like something really basic but I have a shape like the one attached, but when i try to use it with a shadow on a website i get a square shadow, is there a way to remove bottom left and right corners so that the whole image is not square and instead follows the actual outline of the drawn shape if that makes sense??

When you say you're using it with a shadow on a website, do you mean that you're applying a shadow using.html

Your objects are grouped and clipped for no particular reason. The drop shadow is not working because that bottom object has no thickness although it is not a stroked object, it is filled to look like a stroke... better to keep it simple... To cast a shadow an object should be filled normally i.e. be solid.
look at the attached, you can remove the shadow by doing filters > remove filters
