Ok. Newbie. Windows 8. Inkscape 0.45 r10040. I downloaded a font I wish to use. Link -> http://www.fontspace.com/codeman38/press-start-2p
It is a TTF. On Win8 you install by clicking on the font file and a dialog box pops up and asks you to install. Did so, it shows up just fine in the Fonts folder. Tried in Inkscape, showed up on the list, but it didn't actually work. Yellow triangle and "font not found on system". Went looking. Everything basically says to delete the font caches. Tried that, a number of those files would not delete, it said they were in use by File Explorer. Followed instructions from various places, stop service, delete. Reboot. Repeat. Eventually downloaded CCleaner, used it to delete font cache files. Spent the next 2 hours dealing with all the malware the CCleaner install can stick you with, plus fixing all your settings. Still doesn't work in Inkscape. Opened GIMP and it worked fine. Open Document, works fine. it just wont work in Inkscape for some reason and I am at a loss. I've tried everything for hours now and am very, very frustrated.
Font not found - yes I have tried much

Re-install didn't work either. On the assumption that the .46 release glitch had not been fixed, I manually typed it in, same problem.

Yet it works just fine in both OpenOffice and GIMP.
Re: Font not found - yes I have tried much
Inkscape seems to be pretty picky about fonts. Fonts that seem to work fine everywhere else, won't work in Inkscape. I've had the same problem.
If it's something really important, like for work or school, maybe worth it to buy a good font. It's those free ones that I have so much trouble with....although some free fonts do work just fine.
Also, once you get going, you may find that some fonts won't got bold or italic. It's another problem with no easy solution. And again, for me, seems to be the free ones. although again, some free fonts work fine.
OH! (idea
) Maybe look into installing Scribus, an open source desktop publishing project, which supports SVG. I don't know if Scribus can do this. But if you can type your text there, and convert to paths, then you could paste or import into Inkscape as paths. Of course once converted to paths, will no longer be editable as text. But be sure and save a copy of the text somewhere, in case of future need to edit.
Or if Scribus won't convert to paths, I thinK maybe The GIMP can (open source raster graphics with some minimal SVG support).
Anyway, just a couple of ideas
