New to inkscape - how can I convert a jpeg to a vector?

Postby matpj » Fri Oct 21, 2011 6:52 am

Hi all,

I regularly get shapes (black silhouette jpegs) converted to vector and laser cut by a supplier of mine.
Each time they convert, they charge a design fee which is really costing me loads.

I was wondering if anyone can help me by telling me how I can take a simple jpeg and create a vector file from it.
The vector files my supplier show me seem to be outlines - so if I can create an outline vector of my shapes that would be great...
I just have NO idea how to achieve this :-(

advice is very welcome.
Thanks in advance,
Matt

Welcome Matt!

Just wanted to add, besides a welcome -- depending on the complexity of the silhouette, you might have to do some tweaking after performing the trace. For that, use the Node tool.

Or you could trace it "by hand", if you can't get an acceptable trace. First import the JPG. Then using the Pen or Pencil tool, trace around the edges. Instructions for all these tools can be found in Help menu > Inkscape manual (requires internet connection).

Does your supplier specify a vector format that they have to have?
Some shops insist on Adobe format, which might be a bit of a problem for Inkscape.
Your mind is what you think it is.
