Line colour -every colour you want so long as its black?

Postby IainS » Sat Jan 16, 2010 11:56 am

I am a new used using 0.47. I am having fun learning. I have drawn a line with arrows on both ends which I would like to be red not black using the tool to draw Bezier curves and straight lines and added the arrows and the line thickness using the fill and stroke dialogue. Can I change the colour of the line and arrow heads? If so how - I have tried the fill and stroke dialogue and I cannot make it work. Help and Searching this forum have not been my friends.

Are you changing the fill or the stroke color in the dialogue? You should be changing stroke for a straight line. Please post the svg file if you need further help because I can't imagine what the issue is.

Thanks Hogg it seems to be operator error - are the arrow heads supposed to change colour too? I thought they would but they didn't. It would be nice to have an arrow all of the same colour or do I have to do something else to get one.

hmm. Seems like a bug. The arrow heads won't change fill or stroke with the rest of the path. To get what you want follow these steps:
1. Set the stroke of the line to the color you like.
2. With the line selected, do Path>Stroke to path.
3. This created a group of three paths -- the line plus the two arrow heads. Do shift+ctrl+G to ungroup.
4. With all three paths still selected do Path>Union. The arrows should now be the same color as the line because it is all a single path.
5. Zoom in on one arrow head tip with :tool_zoom:. Notice that it no longer comes to a nice point? Use :tool_node: to see the 3 nodes at the end. Delete all but the node in the middle.
6. Repeat step 5 for the other arrow head.

Unexpectedly difficult I'm sure. You might want to file a bug report.

Select the line, then Extensions -> Modify Path -> Colour Markers to Match Stroke.

This has already been reported: bug 165865.

Well, sure, if you want to do it the EASY way.

Seriously, I didn't know about that extension. Thanks SAS.

It's not clear to me that lainS used markers to make the arrows. I wonder if maybe the whole arrow was made with the pen tool :tool_pen: ? Maybe lain didn't realize that the line and the arrowheads would be separate paths, and need to either be a) selected separately to change the color, or b) or grouped before changing the color.

I don't know, that's just how I read the message :? and wanted to chime in, just in case :D
