I installed Inkscape 0.48.4 successfully on my 64bit Win 7 computer, and am starting to learn the program from the documentation found under Help. Sometimes I encounter something that does not work as described in the manual. For instance, I cannot do the following: "The Command Bar, Snap Bar, Tool Controls, and Tool Box are detachable by dragging on the handles (highlighted in blue) at the far left or top." There are no handles to be seen, and no undocking of these bars seems possible. Is there perhaps a compatibility problem with a 64bit Win 7 machine?

Yes, it's compatible. I use such a computer myself. Those items used to be movable, but they aren't anymore. I'm not sure why the manual hasn't been changed. However, assuming you were reading this page: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL ... atomy.html, perhaps you just didn't read far enough. The next sentence clarifies, starting with "New in 0.48...."
