Bring out the cake. We are one year old today!

Postby microUgly » Mon Jun 02, 2008 11:05 am

I'm very excited to announce that InkscapeForum.com is one year old today.

It's exciting because it's very easy to create a forum but not so easy to create a community to keep it alive. So I want to give a huge thank you to everyone who has participated on this forum and turned it into a success :D

I'm a sucker for graphs and stats :geek:, so I wanted to share a few that may (or may not) be of interest. (I'm sorry to say these graphs weren't created with Inkscape  ) For clarity, "topics" refer to new topics, "replies" refers to replies to topics, and "posts" is the combination of both topics and replies.

First up, we have 980 topics, 5135 posts and 617 users. On average that is 2.67 topics, 14.04 posts and 1.69 new users per day.

Image

Image
I think these graphs are pretty self explanatory. The initial spike at the very beginning of this forums life really show how much demand there was. I like to think the steady climb in activity, especially after December, is a sign that Inkscape itself is becoming more popular.

Image
This graph is a little confusing. It's a snapshot of when registered users last visited this site. So it's safe to assume that the left side of the graph shows the rate that registered users have abandoned the forum (about 20 a month). It's difficult to make the same assumption for the right side of the graph as this period may change significantly over time (i.e. users from these periods may still return). We can say that last month, 111 users were active on the forum.

Image
Strangely, 234 users have registered and never posted a single thing  Don't be shy guys ;) Of those who do post I think a healthy proportion are making good use of the forum.

Image
I really like this one. Out of over 918 topics, only 60 were never replied to. And a proportion of these topics weren't posted to ask for help, rather just provide information for people to refer to. So I like to think that when someone asks a question here, there's a very good chance you are going to get some sort of assistance.

Image
Despite not having to register, only 10% of posts are by anonymous users. I personally hate forums that force me register and I think this graph proves you don't need those sorts of restrictions to attract a healthy community.

Google Analytics Visits
Image
Google Analytics Views
Image
The flat-line in December was a result of me forgetting to put the tracking code back into the template . Going from around 1000 visits to around 3000 visits a month I think is really great.

Google Analytics Traffic Sources
Image
Of the referring sites, Inkscape.org provides two thirds of all referrals to this forum. Since this isn't an "official" Inkscape site, I really appreciate their support by linking to it.

The 5 most viewed topics (according to the database)
  1. Your first Inkscape drawing
  2. screencasters.heathenx.org
  3. Please report all forum errors :?
  4. Creating really small icons
  5. Creating Hairs
Google Analytics report is a little different and includes
The 5 most replied to topics
  1. Your first Inkscape drawing
  2. screencasters.heathenx.org
  3. Ungroup text?
  4. Where to find LaTeX command in the menu
  5. Handy programs to help with Inkscape work
And finally who are our most active users 8-)
The users who started the most topics are capnhud, brynn, DannyKing, pixabella, and tie between rosros and MavisPuford.
The users who replied the most to topics other than their own were Simarilius, prkos, capnhud, sas and Darth_Gimp.

Of course it takes a lot more people to make this a functioning community, so thanks to everyone who has participated here :D

Happy Birthday InkscapeForum.com!! Image

Strangely, 234 users have registered and never posted a single thing

I've noticed this type of thing in other forums, and have always thought it strange that people join, but never post a message. I know a lot of it is attributable to people who would be wont to spam (harvest email addresses), scam (phish) and otherwise cause trouble. So kudos to microUgly, and the rest of the InkscapeForum.com's staff, for keeping the forums clear of such garbage. I have never seen an inappropriate post here, and I know it can be a challenge to keep forums safe and clean. So Image good work!

And congratulations on reaching this important milestone!
(PS -- nice graphs!)

Great News Micro.

I know for one that without a forum such as this getting and giving help would be very difficult. Great Job and keep up the good work.

Thanks. I'm proud of not forcing people to become a member to use this forum--it's so selfish to do otherise. It's much more rewarding when people become a member after they see its worth.

Nah. It's strange to you because you aren't that type. All forums have a user activity something like

For each high activity contributor (you), there are ten times as many low activity contributors (me), and for each of them there are ten times as many lurkers(most people).

It's just human nature. All those folks who register and never post are doing so to be part of the community, even if they they never make a visible contribution to it. It can be considered a vote of thanks, if nothing else.

I am newcomer here, but even that didn't stopped me feel attracted to those cakes and cookies
Been using Inkscape for one two months, and as VJ and animation enthusiast found Inkscape very handy. Now its in my "bag of main tools" I work with.Glad there is such forum, still young but evolving.

Good timing yogzatot. I seemed to have missed the forums birthday last year, and now we're 3!

Some birthday numbers:
  • We have a steady 40,000 visits per month which is up from 30,000 this time last year
  • We have 3426 member and 4092 topics.
  • 7% of topics have gone without a reply. I think that's pretty low and shows how helpful the Inkscape community is.
  • The most viewed topic is still How can I import a EPS file into Inkscape?.

Rats! Missed June 1, 2011 to say: "Happy Fourth Anniversary!"

Yeah, this board has been instrumental in my keeping my sanity with Inkscape. The members post some good stuff and there are great links to tutorials.

So

*lifts a late glass of wine*

Happy 4th, Inkscapeforum.com.

I missed it again :D

Wow, 4 years. In internet years I'm sure that makes it 40 ;)

Birthday numbers for the year:
  • We have a steady 55,000 visits per month which is up from 40,000 this time last year
  • We have 7566 member and 5901 topics. That's double the number of members we had last year, but they are probably mostly spam accounts.

Thanks to all our members and moderators for making this forum such a success and keeping it alive and useful.

I`m also bit late for the party, but I`m so glad that I found this forum.
It just completes the joy of using Inkscape.

All the best!
