General Issue (large file is blank)

Postby MEGATRON » Wed Apr 03, 2013 12:14 pm

Having a really big problem right now, help would be much appreciated. So I noticed when I had an Inkscape file and then imported other .svg files into the document the file size would blow up until the program couldn't handle it... So I have no idea what's happening, but I have attached a COMPLETELY BLANK file that is 12.7MB (I imported a few SVGs into it and then made sure I deleted everything)!!!! I am very confused as to what is going on.

Welcome to INkscapeForum!

That sounds like an interesting problem, but it looks like you weren't successful in attaching the file.

There are linear gradients described on hundreds of thousands lines in the codes. Seems it would be easier to redraw the whole thing then to delete the unnecessary parts, to have something displayed.

Do you have any idea why this is happening? (and I believe it is a result of importing documents in)

Inkscape somehow saves every gradient that ever was created in the document. There was something done about this bug, but it still happens some time. It happend with me when I used clones and changed the basic one's gradients with small modifications, that every single new gradient was saved. Couldn't get answer for that how to get rid of the unused gradients, but maybe someone can tell.
But I have no idea what made that to your document.
If you can compare that with previous savings of it, then you might find out where those gradients increased.

Since then I learned the vacuum defs can do exactly that: get rid of unused gradients.
So use the vacuum defs/clear unused defs and save often when working with gradients, especially if you edit their steps with the node editor tool.
When you clone an object with a gradient fill, and edit the parent's steps that way, inkscape creates new gradients with each little move, and can crash shortly (Inkscape 0.48.4 r9939).
