Each new rectangle is an ellipse

Postby OldGrantonian » Tue Jun 23, 2015 6:30 pm

.
I have Inkscape 0.91 with Windows 7. I'm a newbie.

I've done something wrong to my Rectangle tool. When I select the tool, the shape is an ellipse. I think the problem is related to the fact that I was previously experimenting with rounding the corners of a rectangle.

Each new ellipse has a dashed rectangle. The circle node is at top right. As soon as I TOUCH the circle node without moving it, the ellipse changes to a rectangle. If I then use Edit > Preferences and select "Take from selection", the next new rectangle is still an ellipse.

Follow-up question: Is there a way to reset options to the factory defaults? Such an option would have helped in my situation.

If you go Edit- Preferences -Shapes, you will see settings for each tool.
Maybe the Rectangle is set to Last Used Style. And you might have rounded the corner the first time.
If so, either change that setting. Or create a new rectangle, and drag the handle to sharpen the corner. This will then become the default.

Thanks to ianp5a for the response. I got things sorted out. The problem was that the ellipse appeared to have only ONE sizing handle. But when I used Shift+click, that made the corners sharp.

Both the Tavmjong and Floss User Manuals show a "Make corners sharp" button to the right of the "px" box, but I can't see these on my version.
