Symbols showing as blank space

Postby onedbell » Thu Feb 02, 2017 1:42 am

Hi folks,
First post here.

I'm using Inkscape 0.91 on Mac OS X 10.11.6 and don't seem to be able to get my symbols to appear correctly. I installed these additional symbol packs: https://github.com/Xaviju/inkscape-open-symbols now when I drag a symbol onto the page, it just shows as a white box.

Does anyone else have this issue? Did I install these new symbols wrong and disrupt something? Any feedback appreciated!

Hi onedbell,

I'm one of the contributors to the inkscape open symbols icon sets. When have you downloaded your version? The dashicons icon set has last been changed 2 months ago.

For me, it looks like this (directly after dragging on the canvas, in 0.91 on Linux):

Bildschirmfoto_2017-02-01_23-26-13.png (34.27 KiB) Viewed 1717 times

And after changing the color, I get this:
Bildschirmfoto_2017-02-01_23-26-29.png
Bildschirmfoto_2017-02-01_23-26-29.png (4.15 KiB) Viewed 1717 times

Can you post the resulting file with a couple of symbols in it, so we can see if the issue is with the file or with the display of the file?

This is a known issue with Inkscape 0.91 on OS X [1], and has an “easy” fix: Please change the X11/XQuartz preferences as described in the FAQ (and depicted on the mac-os download page for Inkscape 0.91). Then try again to insert a (different) symbol (no need to restart X11/XQuartz or Inkscape).

[1] The underlying issue is the same one that causes vector objects copied in Inkscape to be pasted as rasterized bitmaps: a conflict between XQuartz's clipboard syncing feature (which is enabled by default) and X11-based apps which use file formats other that text and raster graphics. Inserting a symbol from Inkscape's Symbols dialog uses the clipboard and is thus effect the same way (with default X11/XQuartz preferences, the inserted symbol is a rasterized bitmap image of a clipboard snippet, with a solid white background).

Huge thanks to ~suv! This fix does the trick.

Moini, I downloaded the icon pack within the last month - all icons work great now.
