Hi
My fire filter.
Need to tweak it a bit (add more turbulence, counterbalance offset)
But it looks nice, don't you think so
fire filter
Re: fire filter
Yes, very convincing!
Part of it seems to be cut off at the bottom, in about the middle and a little to the left. Also it seems to be redder towards the right. Is that intended? Or is that because the line tapers at that end?
Is this meant for use on text or paths, I assume? The reason I ask is because of some frustration I have with filters. Some seem to only work on text or paths, or small objects in general, and some only work on large objects. It would be nice if it were possible to include with various filters, what they are meant to be used on. Otherwise, if someone wants to use a filter, they have to try every single one of them. So if there's some way to include that info, like maybe in the title of the filter, that would be helpful.

I use a turbulence filter then a displacement filter this tends to offset the shape towards right and bottom.
This often leads to clipping because you go outside of the filter bounding box.
You can increase the filter bounding box (easy but bad : more cpu needed, the shape is offseted)
or you can add a (mirror) offset.
I'll do it the clean way and add offset to fix it.

it's because the line is thinner at the end.

(when finished) it should work with anything but
thins object will be orange (like the line ending)
real big objects will be filled with yellow with a "small" orange border

"size" in svg filters are limited. You can't use "percent" of the bounding box. This make it difficult to design them. You can't tell "height of flame" will be 20% of height of shape.
You could somewhat bypass this limitation by making it a ruby extension and calculating the height when applying the filter but it won't survive any later transform
If some filter works great for big shape and your shape is small you can try to (group/)resize it as a big shape / apply filter / rescale down
and the other way for filters that are ok with small shapes.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Scaling an object with a filter doesn't always work very well. Especially considering that filters are raster. At least that's my understanding. I think filters, in general, need a lot of work, to be used effectively in a dependable way.
But this is really not the place to discuss this. I just have a lot of frustrations with filters, and I shouldn't have brought it into your topic. Maybe I'll look for a bug report, and add my comments there, or start a report if I don't find one.
Anyway, I think your filter is very nice, and one of the best attempts at fire that I've seen

Re: fire filter
i share the frustration of clipping and filter vs object size. it's done really well in gimp but not so much in inkscape. but then i didn't much expect raster filters to be part of inkscape to start with. as much fun and creativity is to be had with raster filters in inkscape, I'd hope that more effort can be put into native svg filters. afaik not all the native svg filters are in yet.
that's a nice fire filter btw. check out the gimp fire plugins and brushes for inspiration.

Re: fire filter
Vince,
is there a chance to get that filter anywhere? Need to set a line on fire for a document decoration. Thanks!
