How to select an object with it's entire outline?

Postby Aakakon » Thu Mar 15, 2012 5:59 pm

Hello everyone! I'm new here and I hope I placed this topic in correct section.

My question is:
How to select an object / text with it's entire outline (contour)? There is always small part of outline which stand out of the selection and for example when I'm changing the size of a page to fit with an image it always cuts some parts of outlines.

Like in this example:

I would really appreciate your help.

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

It's hard to be sure, having just the screenshot. It's possible there's another object underneath, and that you're selecting only the one on top. You could try Edit menu > Select All (Ctrl A).

Or the problem might be with the miter limit of the stroke. If you select and try to move it, and the whole thing moves, including the part that falls outside the bounding box, then it could be the miter limit setting. Object menu > Fill and Stroke > Stroke style tab > Miter limit. I'm not sure if the number needs to be raised or lowered, but you can experiment :D

If the only issue is changing the page size, you can add margins to the page. If you've already used "Resize page to content" then you've probably seen where to set the margins. That might be preferable to changing the miter limit?

Let us know how it goes :D

Which version of Inkscape do you have installed? (See Inkscape menu 'Help > About Inkscape')

Sharp miters not included in the visual bounding box drawn on-canvas for the selected objects is a known limitation in current stable Inkscape (a compromise between performance and accuracy).

Note: Resizing the page to the drawing content had been fixed in Inkscape 0.48.x, and the resulting page size no longer cuts of the miters of sharp corners of paths with a large stroke width, but resizing the page to the current selection still is affected by this - see also Bug #787568 "Miter join style not taken into account when calculating object size".

The next major release (0.49) will always use a more precise method to calculate the extent of the visual bounding box (on-canvas, for bitmap export and for page resizing), and no longer cause long miters to be cut off.
