Invisible lines being exported

Postby foolishgrunt » Wed Dec 12, 2018 2:17 am

Hi! I'm a first time poster and casual user of Inkscape, and for the most part I've been able to teach myself the few tricks I need through judicious Googling. But I've run across an issue that has me stumped. I'm using Inkscape on 0.92 on Windows 7.

I have a series of .pdf files that I'm importing and converting to vector graphics for embedding into a Word document (as .emf files). I don't have access to the original source files used to create the .pdfs, so this is the best option I have, and it's been working pretty well. However, several of the .pdfs have been giving me an odd issue. I've uploaded one of them as an sample.

When I import the .pdf, it looks just like it does it in my .pdf viewer. However once I save as an .emf file, several new (previously hidden) lines appear. I don't know why this is happening: there is only one layer in the imported file, and I can't see the hidden lines at all before I export. These hidden lines do not appear when I save as .svg (Inkscape or plain). So far my workaround has been to use the node editor and delete/trim the new lines, in order to replicate the appearance of the .pdf file, but this takes much more time than it seems like I should have to invest.

Would somebody be willing to try importing and exporting my sample .pdf as an .emf and see if they have the same issue? And perhaps help me figure out how to avoid exporting these hidden lines?

Sorry, I was also going to attach a screenshot of the before-and-after. The right side is the original .pdf, and the left side is what happens after importing to Inkscape and then exporting as .emf.

So, just to be clear, the extra lines are where on the right, the bottom part of the cabinet has been cut away. But on the left, the whole cabinet is visible. Is there more than that?

When you import the PDF, which option do you use? Popler/Cairo or Internal?

Ok, I'll look at your file now. Probably it's some clipping or masking that's getting undone. But I'll post again shortly.

Yes that's correct, the cutaway essentially disappeared, showing the whole cabinet on the left. Thank you for your time!

Oh ok. When I use the Poppler/Cairo import option (for importing the PDF), the cutaway cabinet appearance is retained in the resulting EMF.

Since it's a fairly complex file, I would ask you to examine it closely, and make sure all the features were retained. It looks like that solves the problem to me, but I'm not as familiar with it as you are.

I did not investigate why that was happening, but it must be either a clip or mask that doesn't get respected correctly. Are you interested to find out why? Or is it ok to just have the other import option working properly?

That seemed to do the trick! Everything looks it was imported/exported correctly. Thanks for your help!

To your other question, the only reason I'd like to know why the internal import messed up would be for the sake of reporting a bug upstream (if necessary). For my personal use case, I suspect using the Poppler/Cairo option will be fine, so don't feel like you need to chase this down any further for my sake. Thanks again!
