0.47 too slow with wacom tablet

Postby macti » Thu Dec 10, 2009 1:29 am

I have been using inkcape 0.46 professionally for technical illustration for quite a while now. Most of our linedrawings are based on 3D-Cad data. The model is saved from SolidWorks as a as a dxf-drawing (Well I save it as a pdf). Importing these complex models in Inkscape results in up to 50.000 single paths (objects).
Working with 0.46 is almost on the limit, but in outline mode it runs ok. So far with 0.46 I did not notice any difference between speed when working with mouse or with a wacom tablet when working with these complex drawings.

With 0.47 the behaviour when using a tablet really is worrying:
a) Drawing a bezier curve with the pen tool is delayed; the canvas is not responding immediately with pen touch.
b) I cannot add nodes with my tablet, by simply touching the path (Strg + Alt + click)
c) text tool is not responding propperly

Surprisingly with the mouse:
a,b,c run smoothly with 0.47.

with a tablet:
only with small drawings a,b,c run smoothly with 0.47 (but not with complex drawings)

A new user (using a tablet) would certainly be dissapointed about inkscape when encountering the same problems as I have.
Luckily I have started with 0.46 and don´t want to swap inkcape with any other tool.

Can anyone of you confirm this weird tablet behaviour?
If so, shouldn´t I post a bug about this?

Hi! In your Inkscape preferences there is an item under 'Mouse' a checkbox that says 'use pressure sensitive device' uncheck this and configure using 'input device' from the regular menu.
Always quit Inkscape and restart it using the pen to see the results of your fiddling ... You might have to pick one or the other for each session, specially if your mouse is an aftermarket souped up mouse that loads its own process or service.
Also, I am unfamiliar w/ <strg> is this a keystring?? Adding nodes with the node tool just takes a doubleclick

hope this works for you.

Strg = 'Steuerung' -> 'Control' = Ctrl

thx - somehow I must have missed that shortcut - very convenient ;)

druban: you are my hero!
This morning I started to work with a another complex model plus my tablet. It startet off fine. However over the time the movements with my tablet pen on canvas got slower and slower. Even after restarting.
Only then I changed the mouse settings as suggested in the preferences and restarted. And volia! it seems to be the trick! Tablet pen behaved fine again. I looks very promising. Although I have to do furhter testing to really confirm this.

suv: thx for translating Strg to Ctrl.

Sorry to sidetrack this thread but can I ask how you are using the Wacom with Inkscape?

I have a Wacom Intuos 3 and I don't find it very useful in Inkscape while I use it for everything else (Pro/Engineer, Paint Shop Pro and Xara Xtreme).

It's the little things like zooming/panning etc. Zooming I can only do clicking the right mouse button equivalent, I miss a dynamic zoom or using the touch strip 'mouse wheel'

Any good tips for Inkscape + Wacom? I'm using Inkscape for things like bitmap tracing which it does brilliantly (compared to Xara)

best regards

JimR

Bitmap tracing is not much manual input oriented, but the pen is very useful in Inkscape.
My absolute favorite - pencil tool, bezier setting, smoothness set to 50+, using one of the preset profiles or one of my own. Drawing in a vector program has never been this close to paper and pen.

Pressure sensitivity is not very good at least with my bamboo, but it's not that missed. In the calli tool I use the thinning setting to make fast strokes thinner and get great results.

Alt+select tool lets me draw a line to select complicated and small objects with the pen that would have taken a long time by mouse.

I have one of my pen buttons set to MMB the other set to RMB and the tip of course to LMB. MMB allows me to pan with one click and hold. If you have an intuos you can set two of the tablet buttons to '+" and '-" and zoom in and out with your left hand while you use the pen w your right.
Your mind is what you think it is.

My sincere thank you for finding the solution to the Wacom problem. I had the same happen to my Inuos 3. Followed your directions and everything works fine now.

Anne

I'm sooooo glad I found this. Now my Genius G-pen F610 works! YES!
