Inkscape failing on Mac OS 10.9 (Maverick)?
Inkscape failing on Mac OS 10.9 (Maverick)?
I have been using Inkscape for over a year with no problems. I have now upgraded to Mac OS X 10.9 (Maverick), and Inkscape won't open. I notice that X11 was for some reason now missing from my Applications, so I downloaded XQuartz, but Inkscape still doesn't open. I reinstalled Inkscape -- it now opens, then prompts for a progamme to open, so I browse and choose XQuartz. Now XQuartz is open, Inkscape is open, but when I try to use Inkscape, it just shows me the open X11 terminal. Any help on getting Inkscape back up and running on my machine would be greatly appreciated. Cheers. Tim

My friend gets the same problem so I checked the logs (system.log) and the error message talks about SafeThread which isn't supplied.
I tried to turn "ThreadSafe" to "true" in /Library/ScriptingAdditions/ct_scripting.osax/Contents/Info.plist but nothing change.
I also notice that Excel doesn't work, it doesn't concern Inkscape but maybe it's relevant.
Thank you,

Re: Inkscape failing on Mac OS 10.9 (Maverick)?
I have also upgraded to Maverick (10.9). My Inkscape package says it's 0.48.2, not 0.48.4. Inkscape does ask for X11, now supplied via XQuartz.
Inkscape will load and run on my Mac, but I can't get a Fill color to Fill a shape and I can't get the Gradient tool to pull up a dialogue box or anything that looks like it would do that.
I still consider myself an Inkscape newbie.
I've never seen any audio-visual feedback that tells me a snap to grid setting is working, nor how to set the grid spacing, and as far as I can tell, that's never worked when I've tried it on Windows or Macintosh, particularly if you Move an object (shape, line, etc.) and want it to snap into place on the grid.
Simple things like that have frustrated me each time I've tried to use Inkscape. -- I'm not trying to be a troll, either. I *need* a vector graphics program I can afford, instead of Adobe's high priced subscription / rental / pay-us-forever scheme. I want and need an alternative I can use, on either Mac or Windows, but Inkscape seems to be about the only one I've found so far on the Mac side.
I keep seeing good reviews for Inkscape, mostly from what I can tell, on the Windows platform. I want to get that kind of good response, love the program kind of results.
I'd also like to see better import and export of file formats like .ai and old .fh11 (Macromedia Freehand).
I'd love to see a Mac native version of Inkscape, more than one that runs under XQuartz. It's OK if it runs under XQuartz, so long as it does in fact run fully.
I guess I'll have to wait until the next revision of Inkscape for the Mac platform. :-/ I had better hopes for sitting down and really learning Inkscape this time, but I'll have to wait...and meanwhile find some (any) reliable, usable, not too costly vector alternative. :-/

Re: Inkscape failing on Mac OS 10.9 (Maverick)?
The problem is resolved for me. It wasn't a bug from Inkscape but OSX.
A dirty installation of Maverick (without removing the old os) is the origin of the problem.
So, because I'm a newbie on MAC, I made a complete reinstallation of Maverick (by removing Moutain Lion and formating) and Inkscape works.
Sorry for the polution of the forum, the remedy isn't from Inkscape.

Re: Inkscape failing on Mac OS 10.9 (Maverick)?
It seems like asking any user to reinstall their OS and do a clean install is an unreasonable request.
I really want to support FLOSS efforts, I like to provide my source files as SVG, but they seem to get corrupt on occasion.
I run mavericks, and would like to run inkscape, but I am not going to clean out my machine and recreate the install process to just run inkscape.
However as it stands, the program launches (icon zoons indicating a launch) and then NOTHING happens.
Are there libraries that need to be updated or installed?
Is inkscape relying on some older version of some lib that could be upgraded?
I'd love to get back to Inkscape!

Re: Inkscape failing on Mac OS 10.9 (Maverick)?
Had the same problem; just quite both X11 (quartz) and inkscape, then start inkscape -- (letting inkscape start x11 (and tell it where quartz is, typically /Applications/Utilities), and Inkscape is happy and works fine.
providing this quick answer rather than the one above, which after reading it, required me to another page, then reading that, etc.
thanks InkscapeForum!!!

Re: Inkscape failing on Mac OS 10.9 (Maverick)?
I just installed this today (OS X 10.10.3 on a MBP 15 mid2014).
I too am unable to load Inkscape, just some `plist` messages in the console that I didn't want to bother with.
I don't ever get the dialog to choose X11 (I've also installed XQuartz, and attempted to start Inkscape with/without XQuartz running first)
I was able to get it working though, by just opening an X11 terminal `(Load XQuarts -> cmd+n)` and executing `open /Applications/Inkscape.app`.
The first run took some time, but after that it seems to load up okay, although this seems to be the ONLY way it will start for me.

Please follow the instructions in this post: Re: Inkscape Fails to Launch on Mac OSX 10.10.4
NOTE: Please follow the steps as they are provided - it no longer works to bypass Gatekeeper on a per-application basis (see below); you have to switch to allow from 'Anywhere' temporarily.
Background: As far as we know, one of Apple's recent security updates changed how one has to bypass Gatekeeper for Inkscape (the application is not signed). Sorry for the inconvenience!
Re: Inkscape failing on Mac OS 10.9 (Maverick)?
The dialog prompting "Where is X11" only happens with older packages (Inkscape 0.48.5). The current package for Inkscape 0.91 knows to look for XQuartz.juztin wrote:I don't ever get the dialog to choose X11 (I've also installed XQuartz, and attempted to start Inkscape with/without XQuartz running first)
Apart from the Gatekeeper problem mentioned in my previous comment - you did reboot (or at least log out and back in) after running the XQuartz installer, to complete the installation? This is not an optional step.juztin wrote:I was able to get it working though, by just opening an X11 terminal `(Load XQuarts -> cmd+n)`
