Problem opening Inkscape .48

Postby Lucille » Wed Aug 25, 2010 5:16 am

I downloaded and installed Inkscape .48 today and now it won't open, do I need to download or do anything special to get it to work with Win7 64 bit? I get the following message regardless of double clicking of a file or clicking on the program icon.

The error message reads - "This application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005). Click OK to close application.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling?
I'm also using Windows 7, 64-bit, and just installed and opened Inkscape without any problems. (Although I did have a problem when uninstalling 0.47. btw, did you uninstall old version first?)

Yes I've done an un-install and re-install and it still throws up the same error message. It was working fine after I first installed it now :!:

This is very strange since posting last night I've done nothing with Inkscape, I'm not a huge supporter of uninstalling and reinstalling software. This morning I double clicked the icon just on the off chance and low and behold it opened, what on earth is going on :?: :?:

Have you all tried restarting computer?
Can't hurt to try?

I´m having the same problem on Win 7 Pro 64bit after fresh installation. After one restart Inkscape is running OK. I hope it is good now.

Same problem:
Worked perfectly after fresh Installation.
After OS restart I got an error as described above.
After another restart it seems to work again.
This works as workaround.

I also started getting that error over the weekend. I'd been successfully using it for a few weeks now, and I have it working on 2 other computers. All three of my machines are running Windows 7 64-bit, so I'm not sure why this one is failing. :(

from my brief search there's many different reasons for getting error no 5 in windows 7...which may or may not be related to inkscape itself, but may prevent it running. anyway, if someone has windows 7, is continually seeing the error, and is able to use something like filemon or procmon to trace what's happening with filehandles/processes/registry as inkscape is trying to start, it would be very helpful details.

Stopped working .48 in W7-64. Is it because of Python 3? Every other OS, OK.

I shell out to Inkscape from another program in Windows had have noted that .48 does not open after the first run. .47 does. The problem is that the registry is being over written with Japanese gibberish with version .48. This problem has a moderate rating on the launchpad and no one has been assigned to resolve it. My solution is to stick with 47 or to rewrite the registry before invoking Inkscape. The Registry Key in question is shown below.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\inkscape.exe]

This is not the problem! (don't know what is)
The chinese style characters displayed in regedit are nonsense rendering of unicode string. If you right-click on the key/field and select "modify binary data" you will see the correct human understandable text which is the list of paths required to run all dlls

I have also suffered this problem with .47 any help would be much appreciated

This problem might be linked to personal preferences. Whenever I clear mine the program starts working again.

This problem cropped up for me again. I run a lot of command line batch jobs and usually after 100-200 inkscape invocations it will no longer open normally. Like the previous poster stated deleted the inkscape preferences will get it running again.

I just deleted:
C:\Users\<useraccount>\AppData\Roaming\inkscape

and it runs again.

it would be really useful if/since you can reproduce the problem easily. before deleting zip it up and send to dev team to have a look.

Ok Guys, Thanks for your feedback. So far I have tried everything this no success.

The bug is still there. I am not sure what is causing the issue. It began to happen after my pc crashes. I have reinstalled cleaned out everything with no success.

Any more ideas

Completely shutdown your computer, wait a minute or too, then boot it again. Inkscape should start without crash now.

(The issue will probably re-occur - based on user reports often after system or security updates).

I founded a solution for me (hope that will function for you).
1/ Uninstall Inkscape 0.48 (i did it with Revo Uninstaller in order to scan the registry and kill all the remaining keys)
2/ Reboot your computer
3/ Reinstall Inkscape in another directory than the initial who was chosen by the installator (i choose C:\...\Inkscape48)
4/ Edit the properties of the Inkscape EXE file and choose "Run as administrator"
Now it work for me !!!!

I have had this problem on Win7 just now (Inkscape 0.48.2). Inkscape 0.48.2 have been sitting in this machine for ages and it used to work fine on the same machine a few months ago. It just happened when I need to draw some emblems just now. When this happened I first of all just try uninstall and reinstall Inkscape but obviously this didn't work. Have even tried to download again the same version of Inkscape but still the same. So I am pretty sure that there is nothing wrong with Inkscape as I know the same versions used to work just fine.

Then a quick solution. JUST RESTART WINDOWS 7. Then bang! Everything gets back to normal. Don't even need to edit any configuration or whatsoever.

I too seem to be having this issue. The first line of the message displayed is "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc00000005)". I too am running windows 7 64-Bit Edition.

I have tried switching the machine on and off.

I have also tried re-installing the software.

Originally it was an intermittent fault but now it is stopping me getting into the program with every attempt.

Deleting preferences from local app folder does not help

I don't really have any bright ideas, but sometimes it matters in what order you do things. So you could try this:

-- download a fresh file (in case yours got corrupted)
-- close everything that you have running, then uninstall current program
-- open file manage, locate and delete prefs file
-- close everything again, and restart computer
-- before you open any other programs, install the newly downloaded file
-- restart again
-- cross fingers Image
