White background shows up in .eps export, need assistance!

Postby TheFlagGuy » Tue Sep 16, 2014 7:56 am

First off, hi there everyone! I'm new and not so technologically-inclined so please be gentle

I have a question for you guys: I'm trying to upload a heraldic tiger to a website I use to build my flags to place them in production (BuildASign.com) and when I upload my tiger I keep getting a white background behind my tiger and it's annoying. I downloaded it from the Wikimedia Commons like other images and when I open it in Inkscape it shows that it's got a transparent background, but when I export it to .eps format it won't stay with its transparent background :(

I even checked the Document Properties and it says Alpha channels on the background are all at their transparent maximum.

Any ideas?

If the image is composed of vectors, you may need to delete/modify objects filled with white.

Feel free to upload or link to the image you downloaded and we can take a look.
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Hi.

Some reading you may find interesting:

An excerpt from the manual, linked in the topic above:
PostScript output relies on bitmap fallbacks more than PDF output. This includes any place transparency is used.

So as far as I know you cannot have it transparent with inkscape.
In that matter, the black stripes are made with fills with alpha transparency values, which won't come out right either.

I'm a bit confused that you want to upload eps file to a site, because it's more of the printer's format.

Maybe imagemagick would be a better program to achieve this?

Yeah, that svg has a bit of stuff with alpha-gradients and tranparencies...

LibreOffice draw opens it and exports a funky eps, but that eps can be unclipped and the junk deleted in Inkscape, leaving a version without alphas that exports to EPS without background. That might be suitable with tweeking. (YMMV)

So in layman's terms there's nothing I can do then eh? It's annoying because I've used multiple images from the Wikimedia Commons with no issue whatsoever

If it helps anything I have a .PNG version of the same tiger where the transparency has been worked out to how I want it (solid image with transparent background) with GIMP. How would I go about turning that PNG image into a Vector one? I've been using Inkscape for the purpose of Vectorizing my images but this one's been tricky. Advice would be greatly appreciated

The svg image linked in my previous post may be suitable, as it exports to eps with no background. It could use adjustments where transparent areas been changed to opaque fills.
