Hi,
I new to inkscape and not very good with computers so you plain answers would be great.
I've divided the canvas with a rectangle filled it with color. And I tried to define the sides each by a rectangle.
But when I try to fill these with colors it says either, "area not bounded" or "too much inset the result is empty".
Any advice?

My advice would be to have a look at the manual's quick start section:

The bucket fill tool would hardly produce something you described.
If you could describe what exactly you would draw, it would half solve the problem.
