What Font Did I Use?

Postby TomBrooklyn » Fri Oct 30, 2009 9:32 pm

Can Inkscape identify a font it created earlier?

I created an image with some text and saved it as an .svg file. I want to use that same font for something else, but don't remember what font it is. I opened the file but Inkscape doesn't seem to recognize the font. I can't select the text. Is it no longer "text?" Maybe now it is a picture, and in text form no longer?

Is there a way to identify the font besides a tedious brute force trial and error method?

If you open the svg document, select that element and then use the xml editor it will take you to the text.

The Style attribute will include the font (assuming you didn't turn the text into an object)

Otherwise try identifont.

In my experience the font information will remain even if you turn it into a path.

I recently had a similar problem. One of the fonts I used just said "Sans" but I don't have a font by that name.

Sans is a general font category, not a particular font. This happens when the text is in a font that you don't have installed in your machine, so it falls back to whatever font is marked as default sans on your machine.
