meshing gears

Postby user » Sun Mar 18, 2012 9:37 am

hello!

I have a vector of gear and a vector of test tube

I want to fill half of the test tube with gears as the above of various sizes and colors, meshing each other

how can I do this?

thanks!

Try using the :tool_spray tool. Change the scale factor to set the variation in size of the gears and the scatter factor to change the overlap. Make sure to select "spray copies of initial selection" button on the far left of the toolbar. As far as I know, there is no way to easily vary the color using the airbrush, but you could spray one color gear, then change the color and spray a different color, or you could spray all one color and manually change the color of different gears.

this is nice, but the gears do not mesh each other, at least out of the box

also, it is hard to make them not to overlap each other

any solution to this?

PS: to make the gears mesh each other, I have to make as much as parallel the most near cog to the circly of the other gear (not sure if you understand)

You could take the vector image of a gear and either duplicate or clone the gear. Then move them around until the gears mesh like you want. You might use rotation, to help them fit. Then put them under the test tube image. Perhaps you might need to scale them smaller? (or scale the test tube larger) Please see my signature for info on how to do all this.

Try the live path effect 'gears'. it will definitely get you started, and you can read about it here.http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Paths-LivePathEffects-Gears.html The default values are low so the first try may look weird. But you can use the node tool to edit as you go, and even add nodes (and gears) change the size of gears etc.

these are very nice, what gear effect parameters did you use?

Ooops, I don't remember, and i didn't save the file! It took maybe a minute or two to do so i'll just make another set and post the svg so you can look for yourself.

perfect!
can you remove the blue background and fill half the tube with gears? but gears to mesh each other and fill the half tube as if they were liquid, ie as if the hypothetical line drawn at the edges of the most extreme gears to be parallel with tube walls
small diameter gears may fill the gaps near the tube walls

I suspected this "user" was looking for someone else to do the work for him. And look at that -- I was right. This is one lucky user!

Well, I included the SVG so you can do these things yourself very quickly! Open the svg in inkscape. click on the blue background shape. Press delete. The white highlights on the glass will disappear on a white background, of course.
Clck on the gears object, or keep pressing TAB until it is selected (it is the only shape with a LOT of nodes, read the status bar as you go for a description of what is currently selected). Switch to the node tool :tool_node: and drag the nodes around to change the gear locations and sizes. It's tricky but logical, and the manual tells you how it works. You can also delete nodes (delete key) or add nodes (double-click on the line where you want to add one).
I like to help out on this forum because Inkscape is cool and fun :D but it's really not fair to my paying clients if I do complete assignments for free, so I don't do custom requests like that....

That's the problem! You have asked how to draw a fairly complex image, which we could not possibly instruct you how to do, in any reasonable amount of our volunteered time here. If you cannot figure out by yourself how to select an object (which is explained in all the help material available to you) then I would suggest you give up and pay someone to draw what you want.

The TAB key will take you through your objects one by one, so if you can't click on something with the cursor, you can definitely select it with the TAB key. It does take time! - but unfortunately when you lack experience with a program, time is a necessary sacrifice!
