Unable to reproduce line spacing of previous file

Postby seans_potato_biz » Wed Mar 01, 2017 2:45 am

I'm trying to make a figure using the same proportions as one I made in the past but I'm having difficulty with text line spacing. When I reduce the size of the text, the line spacing stays the same and cannot be reduced.

Inkscape 0.92, Win 7

This is what the original looks like:

This is the new version after copying and pasting:

This is the new version after changing the font size:

This is the new version after changing the line spacing to 1.25 with no units like the original:

I'm afraid that this is a known bug in Inkscape 0.92.0. Inkscape 0.92.1 is available now, and may resolve this issue for you.

Unfortunately Inkscape 0.92.1 doesn't seem to be any different. Exactly what is the bug (so I can maybe find a way around it) behaviour? The problem is happening in new Inkscape documents created with Inkscape 0.92.1, not just old ones opened with 0.92.1.

From what I've read on the mailing list, the developers hope to have it fixed for the next bug-fix release (0.92.2). There's a chance it might be fixed in the development version, but I haven't seen any comments to that effect.

Sometimes you can fix the spacing from the line space setting (on the control bar). But there are also reports that it doesn't stay fixed.

Let's see if I can find the bug report.....

Oh, good news! It says Fix Committed.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1663075

That means there's a good chance it's fixed in the dev version.

Edit
Well, milestone says 0.93. But I know I've seen discussions about releasing 0.92.2 before 0.93. So I'm not sure about that....

Actually, it's fixed already.
If you open an old Inkscape file from 0.48.5 or earlier with Inkscape 0.92.1, it will fix the line spacing automatically on opening.
This is what the linked report is about.

The issue here might be a different one, not sure.

Hhm? Oh you're right, now that I test it! My bad (I just took seans' word for it before.)

But I wonder what's up with the bug report milestone?

I don't know what you guys are talking about but whatever issue I'm facing is not fixed; in the image below, those are consecutive lines but they're spaced out so much you'd think there are lines inbetween. Setting "spacing between baselines" to 0 does nothing at all.

Hi SPB,

Please share an example file, and we can get a better idea about what's happening.

EDIT: actually, please provide original and resulting files.
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

Like I said, this problem is not happening to me from opening old files; it's happening in a new file with pasted text; there is no 'original file' I can provide. I can provide this example though (in the above screenshot): https://www.dropbox.com/s/evynj2urcsfnx ... e.svg?dl=0

Ja, I got the impression that there was an original source when I read "copied and pasted"...

Maybe it doesn't matter:

Hey tylerdurden, I have no idea what you did but it works; thanks!

Re: Unable to reproduce line spacing of previous file

I ran into this yesterday, for the first time. Previously, I could fix the line spacing just by changing the value. But yesterday, the text would not change, even though it was showing the value I set in the spinbox.

Since in the past, certain problems have been fixed by using a new layer, I thought I'd try it, what the heck. So when I moved the text to a new layer, I changed the line spacing, and the text behaved. Then I moved it back into the original layer.

I'm not sure if it was just a fluke, or if it's a dependable workaround?

Not sure if this bug has since been addressed somewhere else, but I'm still seeing this behavior:

inkscape butg.png
inkscape butg.png (15.93 KiB) Viewed 2666 times

This is what happens if I create a new text box that includes a newline and then change the font size. Modifying the line spacing does nothing.

I'm on Inkscape 0.92.3 (2405546, 2018-03-11).

Please also upload a screenshot of your text tool controls bar with the text selected. Then we can tell you which buttons to click on.

@ adotm :

Maybe you have seen the release notes:

http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php ... /0.92#Text

Line spacing in particular.

Omgoodness, that line spacing info in the release notes could not be more confusing!

It starts with saying the way Inkscape used to handle line spacing "is the most commonly expected behavior" and then it goes on to explain how it works now. One wonders why we would want to change it from the most commonly expected behavior. And too bad there's no way to get the old behavior back. And honestly.....I know I'm getting older but I do have a 5 year Bachelor of Science degree, and I can't make much sense of that info.

I get the first and last bullet info, but the middle one - yikes! If that's how Inkscape text is going to work from now on, I suggest that info needs to be in a manual, in addition to release notes. Especially those 4 boxes on the right side, which seem to say more than the text.

... and don't worry, there's going to be a skull in the next Inkscape version... for the most dangerous setting. Which is default... (WTF?) (This was sarcasm...)
