When I choose the Circle Tool and then try to create a circle, it gives me a rectangle! When I click out of it, it all disappears. The rectangle tool does create a rectangle, but when I click out of it, it disappears each time as well. Oddly, the 3D box tool works fine.

I have uninstalled the program and re-installed it, and it all remains the same, so not sure if something else is going on. I think it worked correctly a few days ago when I first downloaded the program. Is there a way to tell if this is a memory issue or something else? I'm stumped.

it sounds like you have no style set, (or its all white) so when you draw all your seeing is the rectangle of the bounding box, which disappears when you deselect.
When the rectangles visible, click one of the swatches at the bottom to select a different color, hopefully your shape will be visible then.

Ok, that fixed the rectangle's issue, sort of, I can add color to it, after I select it, but not the circle's issue, so I must be doing something wrong still.
The circle still comes up as a rectangle, but now one-half contains a triangle with color and the half other is blank. I've played with the edit object tool to make colors, but can't figure out how to get the circle shape back? Didn't know you could get a rectangle out of a circle....

I'm guessing it's actually a circle segment, rather than a triangle, and you need to
select the circle tool
select the "triangle"
press the "make whole" button - the rightmost button in the circle-tool specific toolbar.

yes, it worked. ok, you'all are good, no, make that great, at troubleshooting! I followed the instructions here and the circle is back, yay. thanks much to both of you. I guess I need to learn the non-MS software better. Couldn't find the answers in the guides, etc.

Thank god somebody else figured this out, I thought my installation was corrupted or something. Using the "make whole" button worked for me too.
