Re: apply a drop shadow on an object with a clipping mask?
Do you want to use a filter, or a mask?
There are filters which can make a drop shadow. Filters menu > Shadows and Glows. They aren't simple to adjust, but they can be adjusted. And actually a blur is a simple filter, and the easiest to adjust.
A mask is different, but you still have to use blur to do the mask. But it seems to me that using a mask would be the long way around. Someone else should probably explain how to use a mask, since I don't use them much....assuming a mask is what you meant.

Try putting your clipped object into a group - even if it's the only thing in there. Then Filters > Shadows and Glows > Drop Shadow... on the group.
An alternative that also works is to make a clone of your clipped object, and apply the filter to the clone, but I think the single-object-group is easier to manage.
The reason you're seeing an issue is that Inkscape is trying to apply the filter to the selected object, which is the original object before clipping. The clip is then applied to the object after the filter. Both these techniques shift the filter onto an object that's calculated after the main object is clipped, so the filter applies to the clipped version of the object rather than the original. I hope that makes some sense.

I would probably group the object and the dropped shadow, then dup it. Use the duplicate as the mask, (not sure, but you might have to union them first), then it should mask perfectly.

wow xav and flamingolady you guys were rite on. i had a clipped image with a drop glow on it then i released the clip for some reason and then clipped it again and my drop glow could not be reapplied but when i grouped it after i clipped it that totally worked! goofy stuff but simple solution
