good grapes

Postby brynn » Sun Jan 03, 2010 4:18 pm

Hi Friends,
I know this is going to sound strange, but after I finished eating a bunch of grapes a while back, there was something about the leftover stem that appealed to me. I liked how it was balanced, and it had a piece of the vine still curling around it. And anyway, I thought it would be good practice to try and capture the angles, lighting and balance. Btw, it's lit from below, like one were holding it at arm's length and looking up at it. I think I got the lighting pretty good.

The part that I'm just not happy with is the lower clump of secondary stems on the left side of the main stem. In reality, it is the closest part to the viewer, but something seems off about it, and to me, it doesn't quite appear to be the closest part to the viewer.

Apart from that, I still have to clip away the blurs, before it's finished.

All comments appreciated, and especially any tips about improving it would be welcomed.
Thanks :D

I did a bunch of grapes for a wine label a couple months ago.
You can see them on my website at

Thanks for the little tutorial, Bucic. Maybe I will revisit this image, and try your technique....
In this image, I wanted to study light and shadow, so I needed to do it "manually" so to speak. But I like that technique, I'm sure I'll find good use for it!

Maybe consider posting in Tricks and Tutorials forum? (If it's not already?)

TBH I was prepared for that you've seen that tutorial already :) It's not mine. Source (along with SVG file): http://inkscape.org/screenshots/index.php?version=0.45

The tutorial / example SVG file is distributed with Inkscape: look for the file 'rope-3D.svg' in the 'share\examples' directory in the installation folder of Inkscape.

:o OMG! Are those all tutorials, or just screenshots?
There are 30 of them, for goodness sakes. Does anyone else know about these, or am I just now catching up with everyone else?

What a treasure trove of helpful files! I think it would be helpful to have them accessible from the Help menu -- with a descriptive title beyond just the filename. Then users looking to learn a particular technique could "take apart" the image, to see how it was done!

What the heck! I don't mind giving a descriptive title and making a list. But I haven't the first clue about putting them into the Help menu. Hey, but I could post the list as a topic in Tricks and Tutorials. Then the info would be searchable through the forum's search.

Good idea? Idea worth pursuing??

Those example files have been distributed with Inkscape for ages now, and for normal (linux ;)) users, they are accessible from the 'File > Open…' dialog [1] (a similar bookmark as listed for the user templates folder in the 'File > Save as…' dialog). Just on Windows - because users insisted on getting native file dialogs - they are not (ok, OS X users normally don't see 'examples' listed under 'Places' either, but for a different reason).

IMHO they don't need to be accessible from the 'Help' menu though, and chances that someone will tinker again with the native file dialogs on Windows are low AFAICT. But the feature request (if not already filed), probably would be to make them accessible from the 'File > Open…' dialog on all supported platforms and not just with regular linux installations.

Wow, thanks ~suv!

I'm not sure I understand though. I must not understand what you mean by access through File > Open. Because those files certainly can be opened in Windows that way, given that the user knows where to look for them, right? I'm guessing that very few users actually know they're there. I think I will post a message in Tricks and Tuts. I'm no stranger to "0 replies", lol  (if everyone else already knows about them)!

And omg, filters.svg! I can't tell you how many hours I've spent trying to make samples of all the filters, so I would know what they all actually do (and how many crashes I've had because of using filters)! And here is a file with most if not all of them, already displayed and under multiple circumstances!!

Btw, how do you get that drop shadow behind your screenshot? Must be another Linux trick?

In the default Gtk file dialog, there are some shortcuts or bookmarks added for default places (like the home directory of the user, the desktop and the root of the file system). The 'examples' directory is automatically added there in Inkscape and can be accessed with a single click.

That's a feature offered by Mac OS X (I'm not using linux, though my recent development builds (also used for the screenshot in my previous comment) are basically identical to how Inkscape is run on linux - i.e. not bundled as OS X application.

Really simple thing - operating system independent :P

Open the second one in GIMP or other raster editing program and you'll see how it's done.

Oh, well yes, I know how to add a drop shadow. It just looked like the shadow had been automatically added by the snip/capt/shot app, which I had either not seen before, or more likely, never noticed. If I shopped around, and was willing to pay for it, I'm sure I could find something that would do this on windows. But really it was just a passing curiosity ;)

The grapes you did here look really good, not to mention that Pinot Noir is by far my favorite kind of wine red or white. Did you do a complete version of the stems of did you just craft the grapes knowing that there wouldn't have to be the stem behind it. I find it interesting to decipher how people are using layers in inkscape. Thanks so much in advance I like your page a lot.

Thanks!

I just added a few stems where they would be visible. They are just paths
with reflected gradients across the narrow direction.
