How to open DXF files ?

Postby JLT » Fri Jun 05, 2009 7:42 pm

I've got some file whith important data in the DXF format.

This format can be read by Autocad or Illustrator, but does not appear in the extension list in the "file - open" section of Inkscape, so I suppose it is not supported.

Does anybody has an idea of how I could convert DXF file into SVG file so I can work on them with Inkscape ?

Of course I don't have Autocad orIllustrator and don't intent to buy them !!!!

Thank you ;)

There is a free autocad viewer by autocad its called Trueview.

You can open the file in this, and then if you download and install Bullzip PDF which is a virtual printer that will print to a PDF file you can then print the plans in Trueview to a PDF format that you can manipulate in Inkscape. Please note you will also have to install ghostscript on your machine as well.

Ah if you also want to save in DXF from inkscape search google for inkscape DXFR12 there is an extension that will convert and save to DXFR12 format that will open in DXF viewers.

Okie-doke. Go to http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... _id=152775 and download the file called "kabeja". You can try the Inkscape extension but I think they were meant for 0.45 and I'm not sure if they work with 0.46.

Kabeja-0.4 is a free of charge binary app for Linux, Windows and Mac. Start it up, open your DXF with it and then press an export option. Pretty simple. Personally, I get the best results with the PDF export. Inkscape can bring in PDF's very well and from there you can manipulate even further. Experiment with the Inkscape SVG export and Plain SVG export but results may very. PDF seems to work for me every time. And by the way, the PDF exported may not open in a PDF viewer but it will open in Inkscape. ;)

Hope that helps.
