Unexpected size (larger) when importing TIFF (bitmap) image

Postby jayinkscape » Fri Dec 10, 2010 6:34 am

Using Inkscape 0.48 on Linux (Ubuntu 8.0.4 Hardy).

******************************* EDITED
SOLVED PARTIALLY: I was not searching for the correct terminology. I have just found
http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php ... nkscape.3F

However, I still think that there must be a method that size scaling to fit Inkscape's assumed 90 ppi should be possible. The FAQ says Inkscape "cannot read the image resolution". I beg to differ. I can appreciate that the developers have either not had the time or chosen not to take the time (this is not a bitmap program, after all) to get into reading the imported image file headers, but the resolution information _is_ available in the image files; how else would any image editing or processing program be able to know the resolution?

I am new to Inkscape ... see purpose of use at bottom.
I am sure I must be doing something wrong.

I create a new document/page. I import a 300 dpi TIFF (i.e. bitmap) image file. When I print that file to a laser printer, the printed image is about 4 inches wide. However, when I import that file on my page which is 8.5 inches wide, in Inkscape, the image is WIDER (about 10 inches) than the 8.5 inch page. There is some sort of mismatch between the "resoultion" of the image vs the page. (For print quality, I do need at least 300 dpi image).

What am I doing wrong?

=========

I am a refugee from ancient Visio, looking for a non-Windows open-source program that I can use for making stamp album pages (pretty much look like organizational charts, but without connector lines; they have text or picutres in boxes).

I have tried Dia but ran into too many problems (yet to be implemented features). I could not find all needed features in Kivio. So, I am following up on a recommendation that Inkscape can do what I want, but just not as automatically.

I understand that Inkscape is not a diagramming program, but I hope someday that "complex" objects can be created, like the kinds of objects one drags onto a page in Visio, Dia, or Kivio. By "complex" I mean things such as a text box that has (editable) pre-defined (font, size, etc.) text inside it, all as a single unit.
