How to save a customized filter?

Postby turquoise » Thu Oct 22, 2009 10:15 am

hi,
Using 047_pre4_1 (this is a beta release) I applied the Filter->ABCs->Noise Fill then customized the filter. How can I save the customized filter separately from the document so that it can be reused on another document? Is it difficult to create filters and have them be selectable through the menus? Would the best way to have a group of my own filters to create a separate document which has a bunch of items and each item has a separate filter applied to it? When a filter is needed the item is copied to the clipboard and pasted into another document.

quoting the manual:
If you have developed your own Filters, you can add them as Presets by SVG files with the Filters defined to the filters directory (Linux ~/.config/inkscape/filters). By default, the filters will be added to a Personal submenu. You can have more control over where the filters are placed if you define the following attributes: (...)

user filters directory
  • Linux/OS X: ~/.config/inkscape/filters
  • Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Application Data\Inkscape\filters
    Windows Vista: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Inkscape\filters

Thanks.
I looked at that manual many times but did not see that and never saw even a hint that user filters could be put on Windows into a user directory.

Does it work for you? (I only knew in theory that it is supposed to work on win32 platforms the same way as on the other two - I'm on osx and can't test on win32)

BTW - that's the new updated version of the manual (released today) for 0.47. Maybe it wasn't in the previous edition for 0.46? I can't remember...

hi,
Worked! :D :D
The directory C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Inkscape existed but the subdirectory filters did not so that was created. I'm so used to applications needing special file formats that just using a regular Inkscape svg to store filters was a nice surprise. The filter showed up in Filters -> Personal. Created two filters a small noise and a negative. http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Filters-Color.html#Filters-ColorMatrix

Since the negative filter uses the "background image" a workaround, suggested in https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/189341, needs to be done. Add layer then change layer blend then delete layer.
Thanks.
