Best filters to achieve Android menu icon style?

Postby jimblackler » Sat Feb 05, 2011 8:22 pm

I am trying to convert a monochrome shape to the Android menu style http://developer.android.com/guide/prac ... tml#style1 using Inkscape filters.

Bevels -> Combined Lighting and Bevels -> Matte Bevel seemed promising, but after about 45 minutes of fiddling I don't feel close to the goal at all.

I was hoping a kindly expert Inkscape user could describe a combination of filters that might achieve that effect :-)

Hi jimblackler,
Welcome to the forums! Image

I'm sure ivan louette (our filters guru :P ) will have some excellent advice for you. Honestly I've found it frustrating to learn how to create filters, although I will try again soon. But I think it would be much easier to just draw the icons by hand. Basically you would draw the shape, duplicate it, move it slightly, add appropriate colors, and give a slight (very slight, to my eye) blur. Done!

But if you're bound and determined to use filters, it will be worth your wait for ivan ;)

All best :D

Edit -- Oh wait! When I first followed your link, it opened the image just above the image that I think you want us to see. Because the 2nd time I opened it, it showed the finished version. So my instructions for doing it by hand above don't apply. However, I do still think it would be easier to draw it by hand. And now that I read more on the page you linked to, it appears to be instructions for drawing it. So now I'm thinking that you have some reason for not drawing it,, and using filters instead. So still, ivan will be your best bet!

Here attached are two settings of the new experimental drop shadow. Go to Filters Editor and change the settings to your taste.

If you want remove the black shadow on the vertical lines you must clip the shape in a slightly narrower rectangle.

Or easier again, only work with blur.

In this one, the black inner shadow is only created with a black line clipped inside the house like shape while the white glow is a duplicate of the star with a large blur.
