Hello,

I am wondering if there is a way to customize (e.g. move) the tool icons on the vertical menu (on far left side of screen) so the order is different? There are some tools I use back to back a lot but they aren't near each other...and I'd love to move the ones I use the most closer together. I do use keyboard shortcuts for a lot of things, but I don't like using the F keys on my small laptop keyboard. I know I can reprogram shortcuts, but I would rather just be able to move the icons around in the order I want.

I didn't see any topics relating to this, so please point me in the right direction if I missed it.

Unfortunately, that's not possible. Although it's a much requested feature. Actually I don't know if anyone has ever made a formal feature request. I would guess probably. But you can search the bug tracker (which is also where new feature requests go). Launchpad https://launchpad.net/inkscape

Thanks Brynn...I searched on launchpad and didn't see any topic related to this, though who knows what someone titled it. I put "customize order of tools" and "change order of tools in menu" in the search box and got nothing. I then did "customize tools" and up came 11 entries but none were related to this topic. So maybe no one has suggested it...if it is a much requested feature I'd think there'd be a topic about it on there though. Guess I could go ahead and create one myself. I'll come back in here to provide the link if I do.

Go ahead and post it to the bug tracker as a whishlist item.
It comes up occasionally in the mailing list and on the IRC channels.
We'll have a look at it.

It is a much requested feature. What needs to be done first, though, is converting Inkscape from using GTK2 to GTK3. So the earliest possible time that this will happen is version 0.93. Here's one related report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/414372

Thanks C and Moini. Not sure if I should submit another report given the old related one (from 2010 - 2012) that Moini linked to above, but since it is so old do either of you think it would help? I can wait till 0.93 version...though not sure if this customization will for sure be added to it.

If I were doing this, I would probably make a new report. The reason is because this one (#414372) is more about all the icons not fitting. Like if you resize the whole Inkscape window smaller, not all the icons are showing, and you have to click a little arrow to see the ones that don't fit. For some people, that happens even if they have the window maximized.

So it seems like what you're asking is very different. You want to be able to rearrange the icons. Then if the developers think it's related enough, they will "link" it to others. But to me, we're talking about something different.

And C. Rogers is a developer, so you couldn't have a better invitation!

A pretty long time ago, like version 0.44 and 0.45, all the 3 tool bars (toolbar on the left, command bar, and control bar) could be moved around. You couldn't make a vertical one horizontal or vice versa, but you could move them around anywhere. I really liked that, and don't know why it was removed. That was before snapping was even possible, much less having the snapping toolbar. (Thanks to Diederik van Lierop's very hard, and very excellent work!)
