New to Inkscape and not a computer geek
I sure hope someone can help??? I used inkscape a long time ago but have since had to have my computer almost completely redone. I have Mac version 10.6.8 which I believe is Snow Leopard? I have tried to download Inkscape for Snow Leopard but it does not open I was told I also need X11 which I also downloaded. but when I click on Inkscape icon it opens for 1 second on my dock then disappears nothing opens at all. I dragged the inkscape icon to my applications before I attempted to open it. I tried both leopard and snow leopard. I also tried to download xquartz but that does nothing. when I click on X11 it says I need version 10.7 but there are no updates for my mac. I do not know what I am doing wrong I really am desperate.

XQuartz is the replacement for the old X11. XQuartz is an X11 built for Mac. In years gone by Inkscape used to be built for X11 but now it's built for XQuartz. You will need to uninstall X11 and install XQuartz, before inkscape will run. When Inkscape starts up it takes a while but the first time ever it starts properly it takes especially long (about a couple of minutes from memory.) It does do some useful work in that long startup and also makes sure that XQuartz is up and running etc. By the way, as I've discovered, the download of inkscape is labelled as version 0.48.4, the filename is 0.48.2, but actually when you install and run it, it is 0.48.0. So we don't get any of the newer features ;(
It still works though. Let me know if you have more probs after you try with XQuartz installed.

Hi Doodlebug,
Welcome to the Inkscape forum.
I hope by now you've managed to solve your problem and Inkscape is running smoothly.
If not, well you know I'm not the resident Mac expert, but Don't be afraid to ask for more help if you need it.
someone is sure to see your message eventually and offer whatever help they can.
Chrisww,
Thanks

Does anyone actually use mac ports?
They did have Inkscape 0.48.4 listed on their website the last time I checked.
