Hmmm. I'm not sure I learned much from this piece in particular. Maybe I'll do a tutorial soon. But here are some things:
CMYK picker is good for shadows, highlights, and gradients. It's easy to adjust the 'K' slider to get darker or lighter shades of the same color.
For realism pieces, the more vectors you add the better it looks.
If Inkscape is bogged down by lots of filters, toggle view modes to "no-filter" to help speed Inkscape up.
