A big black box

Postby HTMLCrazy » Fri Feb 04, 2011 3:28 am

I am drawing a logo for a competition that I am in. When I save the logo, a big black box shows up that is only visible in the thumbnail and picture viewer. When I open it in Inkscape, everything is fine. Is there a way to fix this?

This is when (pre)viewing the SVG file outside of Inkscape? Probably you have used 'Flowed Text' or the command 'Text > Flow into Frame' instead of regular text.

Read «What about flowed text?» in the Inkscape FAQ for details, and convert flowed text into regular text (using menu 'Text > Convert to Text' before saving a copy as SVG file to be viewed with other SVG renderers or published on the web.

I didn't use any text. I drew each letter individually so that it would be seen as an actual shape.

Hi HTMLCrazy,
Welcome to the forum! Image

hhhmm...Image...How are you saving it? SVG? PNG? If you're saving PNG, that could be the problem. Instead, you should use File menu > Export Bitmap. This saves a PNG version of the image (yes I know it's confusing --- I really would like to have the ear of any developer who could change the wording  . Export Raster would be better ;) ).

Other than that, I'm not sure. If it's an exceptionally large file, it may be just taking a while to render the image. But that's probably not the case for a logo though.

When you say "thumbnail", has it been already uploaded to the internet? Often ImageShack displays transparency as black in thumbnail view. I don't know about the picture viewer....

I'm sorry, I wish I could be more helpful :(

You still could have an empty flowed text frame (that's what normally causes the symptoms you describe - a black box rendered in all other SVG viewers except in Inkscape). But without having access the the SVG file, that's just a guess ;)
