Do you sell your work on Society6 or ImageKind or the like?

Postby inkler » Mon Feb 27, 2012 3:10 pm

For fun, I came up with an illustration (made in inkscape, of course!) that a few folks have begun asking prints of. I've been a graphic designer for well over a decade, but have never really gotten around to doing anything serious with my personal side projects and maybe it's time I try selling a print or two.

It looks like the main two avenues for selling art prints are Society6 and ImageKind. Have any of you used either and have any opinion one way or the other? Are there other services I should look at?

I'm not familiar with those organizations, and neither am I an artist who has sold any work. But I do know that a really lot of artists like to display their work at DeviantART (http://www.deviantart.com/). And there is some sort of program there, where people can buy prints of your work. I don't know any details, but you could look into it.

Another popular site for artists is Flickr. I don't have a link handy, but that's the proper way to spell it. I don't know if they have a print feature.

And I know an excellent artist who posts some of his work in the Finished Work subforum here (check out topic called "Dillerkind's image pool"). He mentions having some of his work put on t-shirts to sell. I think there's a link in that topic. I'm sorry I don't remember the name of the site at the moment.

Deviantart is certain an option...though I'm not sure I have the time nor output to fully devote to that wonderful site.

Flickr, alas, while a good place to show work, has a very strict no-commercial policy so linking to work for sale is likely not going to fly there.

What I like about Society6 and ImageKind is that they act as a complete fulfillment house...so will print and ship it all for you.

Small correction on Flickr as I use that site quite a bit - for a start it is predominantly a photo site, so not really a good place for inkscapers. It does have a commercial arrangement with Getty Images where you can license work through that site. However, I don't think Getty is exactly a go-to place for vector work either. I have seen vectors on other stock photo websites though.
